Guest guest
hi there, I have a question for all you cooks out there. What do you use for steaming veggies, and for cooking your rice. My rice cooker broke, so I was just using a regular pan until I burned one by forgetting the rice. Then I burned up my veggie steamer pan that I have used for about 10 years!! (new baby, lol) so I have seen there are some rice cookers that also are veggie steamers, should I get one of those, or is a plain rice cooker better. other ideas? Just thought I would see what some of you are using befor I go and buy new appliances/pots. Thanks for your thoughts! Danielle
Guest guest
I have a very cheap black and decker rice/vegetable steamer that I bought at Target at least ten years ago. I use it for rice and chickpeas (steam is the secret to great hummus). I very rarely steam vegetables; I usually stirfy or eat raw (occasionally, I will use the microwave, in a tempered glass dish). ________________________________ DanielleB <mylameoww Tue, February 9, 2010 12:01:01 AM [veg_grp] veggie steamer/rice cooker? Guest guest
Hi, For veggies, I have one of those metal sieve like fans you put in the pan with water and steam them. It is great as depending on how much veg there is I can choose a pan - or if the only clean pan is the big one I can use that. The water is then used for gravy or soup base. Rice - I just boil it in a pan of water. For Indian rice I might fry it with spices and then add water for pilau rice. Some one showed me a way if you boil the rice for a bit and then steam it, it comes out less sticky but then I thought it was rather like a boil in a bag and didn't like it. Best wishes, Belle , " DanielleB " <mylameoww wrote: > > hi there, I have a question for all you cooks out there. What do you use for steaming veggies, and for cooking your rice. Guest guest
I use my steamer/ rice cooker more then anything. Before I had the cooker to steam the veggies I used this little basket thingy that fits into a pot. I know they are under 5.00. Guest guest
Hi, When my rice cooker broke I got a smallish pressure cooker and used the fan type steamer-independently bought-that is great for many kinds of veggies. I know there are new ones that are esp. made for the microwave but I find that stove top ones are faster as I also enjoy the rising steam/fragrance of the vegetables, Marika
Guest guest
I have a rice steamer with a veggie steam basket that can go on top and it works great, shuts itself off when the rice is done so I don't ever have to worry about burning the food. I think it's by black and decker

Guest guest
I have an electric pressure cooker which is also a steamer. I can make brown rice in 8 minutes. It is really simple to use and is in use almost every meal. M On Behalf Of Kim Thursday, February 11, 2010 9:20 AM [veg_grp] Re: veggie steamer/rice cooker?
