Guest guest
My aunt, a longtime vegetarian, was fed beef broth and chicken broth at the hospital where she recooperated from her hysterectomy. She couldn't keep the beef broth down at all, and was told they didn't have any vegetable broth... so ridiculous! If I had known about it (before she was discharged!) I would have brought her some -- I will remember this for future, for her and for me! A large hospital here in town (actually, the hospital where I was born, and the one to which I live closest) is Seventh Day Adventist-affiliated. It would be interesting to know if they are more vegetarian-friendly in their meal choices than, say, a Catholic or Jewish hospital. I have never been in-patient there, but I have a card in my purse that states it is my preferred hospital in case of an emergency (for other reasons - friend had a very bad experience in ER at another local hospital and my family and I have had only good experiences in the ER and in-patient at this Adventist hospital). I also wonder if the nutritionists at this hospital would be more knowledgeable about vegetarians' needs than my doctor, who admitted she doesn't know much about nutrition?? Guest guest
I'm positive the Seventh Day Adventist Hospital hospital will have delicious vegetarian meals. I love to catch meals in the cafeteria when I'm near one. My parents worked in them all of their lives and we often had lunch in the cafeteria. They really do encourage a vegetarian diet with the SDA church members, as a part of healthy living. The SDA hospitals usually offer vegetarian cooking classes to the community, at their hospitals. I was born in one too Audrey. Glad to hear that you've had such positive experiences at your location too. Guest guest
It has always been the closest and most convenient hospital for my family and we have always had good experiences there -- mom and grandma have both been in-patient there for various issues, and we've each spent our fair share of time in the ER for minor injuries. A friend told me where to find a little SDA food store in the basement. Not a huge selection (no frozen products) but good basics, and the prices are very reasonable. I'll have to check out the cooking classes -- probably more " normal " food than Whole Foods' classes! Guest guest
In Australia at least the SDA's will often run Vegetarian cooking classes from their churches as well so that might be something to look at too! I found out yesterday that there's a small shop in the city of Perth that sells a lot of imported vegetarian and vegan foods and other products so next time I have time down there I must check them out....they do mail order too. I am down in Perth fortnightly - I live in the country about 90kms east of the city. I've been after agar agar for ages as I used to love jellies but won't eat anything with gelatine in now I know where it comes from and what it is, so will definately have to order some of that and play around with fruit jellies.
