Guest guest
Mike, I've only seen the Heinz brand of canned baked beans here, but my guess is that, to make them home-made, it might be helpful to look at the ingredients list on the label and see what's there. Of course, you don't want the preservatives, but it would give a general idea of how the desired " flavors " come about. Usually, the ingredients are listed in order of quantity, so that's a clue...You would have to " experiment " a bit and tast as you go to get it the way you like, but that seems do-able. I, too, like to make baked beans " from scratch " . I have a sort-of (not written down) recipe that I go with when I make them. Taste usually is my guide--I sample the mix as I am adding to it and it works out pretty well that way. Wishing you the best in your " flavor quest " ! --Laura B., in Illinois I love baked beans but in an effort to remove preservatives I've been making my own rather than buying them I've tried a few recipes and they are great, btu here's the deal: I really love the canned ones and can't find a recipe that tastes like them! Guest guest
About the canned kind..... When i make canned baked beans, i get the cheapy brand, and add brown sugar and a little onion powder. Now my friend showed me a cool tip, and my daughter won't have them any other way, I bake em'! the sauce comes out nice and thick. you have to keep ann eye on em' so they don't over cook. i bake them at whatever temp i am baking other things on, usually about 350-375 degrees for about 20 to 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. blessings, Chanda Maria
