Guest guest
Hey Ginger: Welcome to the group. I used to be a homeschooling mom, too. What part of Louisiana are you from? I have LA roots. My entire family is from there. My mom was born in Natchitoches, and grew up in Colfax. My dad was born in Boyce. Have you found it difficult to find vegan food there? Is your family vegan also? When I started out, I was a vegetarian and no one in my family was. It was a little difficult getting relatives to understand that just because they had vegetables didn't mean I could eat them. Being from the South, everything had a hamhock or bacon or some meat-like substance, lol. My best memory though is my uncle fixing me vegetarian ettouffee. Man, that was so good. Wish I could replicate it. Anyway, welcome to the group. You'll love it here. There are enough recipes to cook something different every day, every meal for a couple years! Guest guest
Hi Elaine. Thanks for the welcome. I am just outside of Baton Rouge. I have not found being vegan difficult in the least. That said, I'm not a big fan of " fake meat " and generally get my proteins from beans, quinoa, and the occasional serving of tofu (but not more than once a week). My family is not vegan - or even vegetarian with the exception being my Dad, who has been vegan for 7+ years. We have been eating vegetarian meals a few times a week and my family was fine with that. Now I have a vegan meal one night, a meal for the omnis the next night. I am getting tickled, though, because the meat leftovers are hanging around in the fridge, but my vegan leftovers seem to disappear when we close the refrigerator door! :^) I did go to my first " outside of the family " event last Saturday - a missions group from our church and it was potluck. I brought a pasta dish, some hummus with veggies/pita, and vegan chocolate mocha cupcakes. Of course, everything else was meat or was in a creamy/cheesy sauce. The pasta was Vegan Yum Yum's Spicy Lemon Pepper Pasta with Broccoli that my family now adores! http://veganyumyum.com/2008/01/spicy-lemon-pepper-pasta-with-broccoli/ And everyone raved over the vegan cupcakes (and I am in love with the book " Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World " ). Of course, this was also the first time to be A Spectacle - " You're vegan? What does that mean? What do you eat? What about eggs? What about fish? What about butter? How did you make the frosting for these cupcakes - it's delicious! " Funny, yet disconcerting at the same time. I've actually been adapting a lot of my own recipes, but have enjoyed trying new ones. I love to cook - and eat! I'm looking forward to trying some of the new recipes from this group. Ginger
