Guest guest
Hello everyone! I have an eighteen year old daughter who is underweight. I am very concerned about her because I can literally grab each bone of her ribs and wrap my hands around her pelvic bones. She eats a LOT, but she is not gaining. Is there anything I can give her to beef up but healthy? I really appreciate any help you can offer. She is also vegetarian. Thank you in advance and have a blessed day! Guest guest
Shelley this could just be her metabolism. When I was her age up to 32 I ate like a 300 lb hard working construction worker and I had bruised hip bones from banging them on everything, ever rib showed. I would eat 6 orders of fries at a time, a dozen donuts too. No one could believe it. Have her thyroid checked to make sure she doesn't have hypothyroidism and also make sure she isn't hiding anorexia. I know it's so common now and can be hidden easily, I know a few of them. Is she hyperactive? I'm like a race horse running all the time and that burns up more calories than the average person uses. I'm not a skeleton anymore but I have no problem eating a whole pie or eating a large bag of potato chips or a pound of candy, and I don't put weight on fast. Guest guest
I would increase all of her nut and legume intakes to every meal. We use lots of sesame oil for healthy fats, avocado is also really good with healthy fats. Hmmmm...let me keep thinking. I have a toddler so I am usually trying to keep her belly content (she is a huge eater and is very lean) and keep healthy fats around. Cassie " life's a garden, dig it! Guest guest
Hi Shelley, I just had this talk with my kids' doctor this past week. My boys are 15 and almost 18 and both are incredibly skinny (6' tall and 128 lbs). He said lots of legumes and LOTS of nuts and nut oils. He said to just slather peanut butter or almond butter on whole wheat toast for them for breakfast and just try to get as much of those healthy oils in them as possible. I remember when I was a teenager and into my 20s, I had the same problem. I was constantly being asked if I was anorexic and I'm most definitely not. It's probably just genetics and metabolism, as long as your daughter is healthy in every other way. Pam
Guest guest
Cassie, I have been adding legumes to about everything lately but she is not gaining. She even got on Wii fit and it told her she was underweight. She is not an active girl either, otherwise I could see why she would stay so thin after eating so much. I have wondered if it was the metabolism too that someone mentioned. Sorry, whoever you are, I accidentally deleted it because I couldn't see which one I clicked on. She does not like avocados. I love them though. She is not typically picky. Thank you for taking the time to try to help. It means a lot.
