Guest guest
We went out for dinner for our anniversary last night. I ordered a Chinese Chicken salad-no chicken. It was great but when I asked my husband if we got charged the same as if I had the chicken, he said we always do. Even though I request food on the menu, just no meat added (not like they have to cook anything seperately, I don't order casseroles or anything) we always get charged the same. He didn't mention it before because he didn't want me to be upset and he wanted me to just order what I want. Somehow this doesn't seem fair. Am I just being grumpy? Do other people get a discount for not having the meat with a dish? I know my husband won't ask for a reduction in the bill, so maybe that's the problem-you have to ask. Guest guest
I live in a very small town where there is only one Chinese restaurant. Most of the time they refuse to even make anything the way I ask for it. There is one girl there that will take my order and have the cook make it without fish sauce or oyster sauce but she is the only one. I do get charged the same, but for me I am just happy to be able to eat with my family so I just pay it anyways. It might be different in a bigger town but here they know we have no other choice. I don't think it's right, but that is what they do. Guest guest
That is a pet peeve of mine, too. I always ask the server how much they are going to charge me with no meat. If they are going to charge the same thing, I tell them to leave it raw and put it in a to-go box and give it to someone who will eat it. I am not going to pay for food they keep. If I get something with eggs on it and they don't have egg beater, I do the same thing. I tell them to bring them raw, still in the shell in a to=go box. They laugh at me, but I do it anyway. Guest guest
I guess I know too much about the restaurant industry to feel very comfortable asking for special meals in most restaurants. I have read an article from the food tv website on " chef's pet peeves " and one was special meals. They even mentioned being at a restaurant where the chef put lamb's blood in a vegan's marinara sauce. <gag - even on a non-vegan level, that would make me gag> I'm afraid to tick off a chef for fear of them doing something icky to my food - even before I read the blood thing. I figure it was my choice to eat an uncommon diet and it is not the place of others to accommodate me. I have eaten out twice in two days - the only times I've eaten out since becoming vegan, although we had cut our eating out before that due to budget constraints. But the first was at an Italian restaurant with excellent information and the second was at a sushi restaurant where I picked things I KNEW were vegan (there were very few, but the items I did eat were excellently prepared). I prefer cooking at home regardless - I'm weird about restaurant cleanliness as well. :^P Ginger
