Guest guest
I just discovered something called " smoked tofu " , that I bought 2 days ago from a health food store. (I forget the brand...it's organic, has a tree logo on it...) Anyway, today I sliced it at one end--thin strips, about 1/4 " to 1/8 " thick and " fried " them in a tiny bit of light olive oil, then drained them. I put them in a sandwich with romaine lettuce and some mayo. Well, I wouldn't say it tastes EXACTLY like " bacon " (which, I confess, I really like the taste of), but maybe it's more sort-of like smoked cheese in flavor and texture, which is pretty good, too. I think there's a tart-ness to it, which is probably because I think the tofu had some kind of marinade for part of the flavoring. Smoked cheese with lemon juice on it might be pretty close to how it tasted; I definitely LIKE it. The one bad thing is that something like smoked tofu is sort of expensive and, for me, hard to find--nothing closer than about 45 miles from here. At least I know it's out there and I can keep it on the radar to get once in a while--sort of as a treat! My husband probably won't want it, so that means it's all " mine " whenever we have it in the house! YAY!! Now, if I had fried, smoked tofu, some hearty whole-grain bread, some fresh, crispy romaine lettuce and a good, ripe TOMATO...MMMMMMMM!!!! (Hurry up, SUMMER veggies!!) Good wishes to all! --Laura B., in Illinois
Guest guest
Laura, you might try marinating regular tofu in some liquid smoke, maybe some spices? If you can get plain tofu at your Walmart or grocery store. Audrey
