Guest guest
Oh Donna, You're most welcome. I'm very glad you were able to surprise your nephew and the others with these SE USA delicacies. We sure love green boiled peanuts here. The produce stands around here will have green boiled peanuts boiled up aready cooked or you can buy them fresh to cook yourself. I cook them up myself. The rest of the year they have regular peanuts, still in the shell, for sale and boil those up. Green peanuts are better, but you can only buy them mid summer thru mid September. Here is what a green peanut is, in case you've never seen them before. http://greenpeanuts.net/ They come in regular size peanuts or jumbo size and taste slightly different. We prefer the flavor of the regular size peanuts. Judy .
Guest guest
Hi All I have been brought up in kenya where we find these peanuts around the winter months that is June July. Back home we either had them boiled or roasted. The biled ones were prepared by boiling salted water and and then adding the peanut shells to it . It was boiled till the peanuts were cooked tender. The raosted ones ones were dry roasted in a wok. They are both Yummy to eat. Pravina
Guest guest
OK, Fellow Angelino, so what do they taste like? Since they are green (not fully ripe) do they taste like edamame? I remember reading somewhere about eating boiled peanuts but have never come across them. Lu A cat isn't fussy - just so long as you remember she like her milk in the shallow, rose patterned saucer and her fish on the blue plate. From which she will take it, and eat it off the carpet. Guest guest
Lu they do not taste like edamame at all. I love both. Boiled peanuts taste like peanuts but with a legume quality to them. I am going to have to grow them in order to get them here, now i am trying to grow edamame, not sure how this will go ... Guest guest
Hi! I've always heard that peanuts were of African origin...I just never realized that the Southern practice of boiling them in the shell in salty water was also an " import " to the western hemisphere from there. That is interesting! I looked at the " peanut guy " website and was saddened to see that they cannot ship right now, " due to illness " ! I'm an apparent anomaly: northern-born and raised, but I totally LOVE boiled peanuts! I have NEVER had the " green " boiled peanuts, but I would so love to try them sometime! I'm hoping " peanut guy " gets back in business of shipping sometime soon. If I've missed the " season " for the green peanuts, then I can at least bookmark the site and wait for them to be available next year! I'm not at a loss for the " dry " kind of boiling peanuts. I have been able--with a lot of hunting--to find " raw " , dry, un-salted peanuts in the shells for boiling. My crock pot and a lot of salty water do the trick nicely! I love these in the WINTER, on a cold, maybe snowy day...It's kind of like the kind of day for hot chocolate or chili-soup; a " boiled peanut " day! YUMMMMM! :-> --Thinking of the " goobers " fondly, Laura B., in Illinois I have been brought up in kenya where we find these peanuts around the winter months that is June July. Back home we either had them boiled or roasted.
Guest guest
The peanuts for boiling are those fresh from the ground green) . They're a stone.....er....stinker for washing clean of sand. Roddenberry's Peanut Patch canned, boiled peanuts are good in a pinch. They're not as good as fresh boiled but pretty good if you can't get down south for the real deal. Down here we can get them in a number 10 can, small 15 ounce cans and plastic packets which usually are put in the fresh veg section. The number 10 size cans are about $6 at Sam's Club down here though shipping would probably be a big higher, so thouse of you looking to buy online might want that baseline to go by. I've seen them selling for like $24 a large can, which means someone's making a big chunk of change. Hmmmm.....maybe there's the market and people willing to get shelled...er... Annnnnnnnywho....get a big bowl of hot peanuts and one to throw in the shells, a huge drink and a bunch of napkins and go to town. Even drained they are messy to eat and completely worth it. Addictive critters, too. Hugs, Jeanne in GA, where the green peanut market is pretty much closed and the peanuts for roasting are getting harvested now. To harvest, they go along the rows and harrow them out of the ground. They then sit on top of the ground a while, then are harvested, shaken free of soil, detatched from the plants and so on. Guest guest
Are these green peanuts what they would use to make the peanut sprouts that you find in some stir fry vegetables? I love those peanut sprouts but they are so very expensive here. Christie
