Guest guest
These both look good. Luckily we have lots of Indian friends. We visited Houston in August and the family we stayed with gave us cooking lessons each night and took us to a couple of Indian grocery stores and we stocked up on the essentials. Still, it was all extremely foreign to me (excuse the pun). I am slowly getting the hang of it. I'm always intimidated by anything new at first. We live in a rural area, so groceries here in general are hard to get - that is what I'm looking for. Organic is unheard of in our town. So, I travel 30 minutes to the next town or 50 minutes in the other direction for a better selection. A few summers ago I went to the local farmer's market and picked up a cantaloupe and asked the vendor if it was organic. He said, no dear, that's a cantaloupe. I'm sure he marveled at my stupidity. Still the nearest Indian grocery is 1 1/2 hours away, but I've found a purchase there is relatively cheap and goes a long way. Hinge is used in lots of dishes which is supposed to counteract the spiciness and help prevent heartburn. Also, yogurt is used greatly at meals which akalizes. I'm also learning about coconuts - I'm a slow learner and coming to this stuff late in life. I want to try coconut chutney this week. I'm not really big on planning ahead, so with Indian food that can be a problem for me, because there is lots of pre-soaking for hours. Cream of wheat (also known as semolina or sooji) is a staple and is used for main dishes and desserts.
