Guest guest
I'm sure it's black-eyed peas. Many of us out here in L.A. say beans. Those things sure look like beans to me. I doubt I ever use the word peas. Guest guest
Thanks. I have eaten black-eyed peas all of my life but never heard them referred to as beans. Regional names, I guess. There are a lot of similar legumes grown in east Texas.....black-eyed peas, Crowder peas, purple hull peas, field peas and cream peas are the ones that come to mind. All have a similar taste and all are cooked the same way, but black-eyed peas are the only ones that you see dried in bags at the grocery store. What is so funny is that my daddy, who was born in southern Illinois, met and married my mom in 1944 in Dallas, Texas. She was born and raised in Irving, Texas (former home of the Dallas Cowboys). She had grown up eating black-eyed peas too but when she fixed them for my dad, he would not eat them. He said that they were only used for cow feed in Illinois. He finally broke down and tried them and liked them just fine and enjoyed eating them the rest of his life. I used to live in Athens, Texas (The Black-eyed Pea Capital of Texas) and in 1981 entered the Black-eyed Pea Jamboree Black-eyed Pea Cooking Contest. It is held every July. I won 3rd place in the Main Dish Category and you would not believe some of the black-eye pea dishes that were entered. There was a black-eyed pea ice cream, black-eyed pea bundt cake, appetizers, side dishes......anything you can think of is made and entered in this contest every year. An amazingly versatile vegetable. We love them. Nancy C. East Texas I'm sure it's black-eyed peas. Many of us out here in L.A. say beans. Those things sure look like beans to me.
