Guest guest
Amanda, I can certainly understand your situation, and can add some perspective to it, as well as some ammunition for you with your family. I became a vegetarian almost two years ago. I'm a 6' 5 " 255 lbs. 33 year old male. I played football, always ate hamburgers and steak, and everything. I also live in a part of the country where high amounts of beef are produced and there is a steak house, bbq place, or hamburger joint everywhere. Thus, culturally it is expected that you eat meat. My mother still brings up this fact every time we go out to eat at a restaurant, however over time these occurrences have reduced and people start to deal with it. My fiancee says meat eaters say these things because deep down they're guilty for eating meat themselves. However they feel those feelings are theirs to control not yours. You didn't create them or make them. While being a vegetarian, I've had two annual physicals. Each time I've checked out at 100%. They only thing I noticed the last time was a higher cholesterol. I eat diary, so I'm trying to reduce the amount of cheese! Basically though I'm healthy and I'm a larger guy. I exercise 3-5 times a week and don't have weight problems. Now, all of this said, woman's bodies are different and you may have other health issues, but there are many ways to be a vegetarian! Finally, how you handle your family and friends can be as hard or easy as you want to make it. Always take the initiative when doing family meals and going out to eat. Most meat eaters will not be that accommodating to you because many feel a lot of vegetarians are just trying to draw attention to themselves, so try and deflect any of that by taking the initiative. However, in the end be yourself and do what you want to do! Guest guest
Hi Amanda!! I'm Annie, and I'm 56 years old, and have been vegetarian for about 8 years now. And I still get grief over it. My DH is a reluctant vegetarian, but won't eat anything with tofu in it or tempeh or anything that shrieks VEGETARIAN. My daughter just thinks I'm old and eccentric, and my son-in-law thinks I'm missing out on some real good steaks when he grills out. He'll grill me some portobello mushrooms, but thinks I'd really rather have a good steak. (he's wrong) I am healthy as a horse! I get the sniffles during the pollen seasons, but haven't gotten sick in years. I do have Parkinson's Disease, but that is not brought on by the foods you eat. Anytime you want to talk, give me a shake and email me, and I'll be happy to talk to you! I don't bite! Promise!!
