Guest guest
My favorite dessert is what people call watergate salad, and I have always had that since I was a little girl. I call it green jello dessert. Well, I did not know that jello was made from nasty parts of the animals! Even a lot of Seventh-day Adventists eat jello, and I just found out not too long ago how it is made. **gagging** I am sure some of them don't know that. Okay now I would love to make my favorite dessert without using this brand Jell-O. Have any one of you made it the vegetarian way? I would appreciate it if you would send it out here or to me. Thank you. Suzanne
Guest guest
i think you can use a plant base called agar agar or something like that , the powdered kind is better .try the health food store for this product!
Guest guest
The version of Watergate salad I've always had is made with pistachio pudding, so I'm not sure what you're referring to... http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Watergate-Salad/Detail.aspx. Pistachio pudding shouldn't have gelatin in it, so it should be veg-friendly except for the marshmallows (which contain gelatin). I have had this before, it's just like jello but vegan: http://www.veganessentials.com/catalog/natural-desserts-gluten-free-vegan-jel-de\ ssert.htm. They do not make a lime flavor, but they make unflavored so I'm sure you could play with it and make your own lime jel from it. Hope this helps. Guest guest
Audrey, Linda... Thank you for your help! One problem is that I am not too keen on pistachio pudding. We always used lime jello to make this dessert. Oh no please not those marshmallows! They are one of my comfort foods. ;-) I guess I have to learn a lot about vegetarian lifestyle. I almost never go to the health food store here in this town as it is very expensive that I can not afford buying anything there. I have to do the best I can with whatever I can afford to get. At this time we are unemployed. We eat a lot of vegetables that I like to doctor up with seasonings and herbs. Suzanne
Guest guest
Suzanne, somebody has posted a recipe for vegan marshmallows (not sure where it is), and you can buy vegetarian marshmallows here: http://www.sweetandsara.com/. I have not tried the recipe or purchased from that website. I do make Rice Krispy Treats with marshmallow fluff (no gelatin). Hope this helps some!
