Guest guest
I want to start making my own cheeses and although I have found a few sources for vegetable rennet, no one has been able to tell me how to make it myself. Does anyone know if there is a way to make vegetable rennet at home? Is there a way to make cheese without rennet altogether? I seem to remember my Polish Mama using vinegar or buttermilk to make what can best be described as cream cheese. Any suggestions are always appreciated. Peace. Guest guest
Andrea, I make my own cheese too. You don't need rennet to make cream cheese. This site has a lot of helpful information: http://www.cheesemaking.com/ They have an organic liquid vegetable rennet, I like to use. Guest guest
Andrea, One of the easiest cheeses to make is *soft or cottage cheese.*. I just heat milk to just before it boils and then add a few drops of fresh lemon juice or vinegar. The whey (clear liquid) immediately begins to separate from the curds. Strain and let cool and refrigerate. You can add herbs and spices to this cheese. It's fun and so easy that children can make it.
