I thought this might be of interest to those who do not know what

happens in India on the death of a sage. I certainly did not.

To make the Samadhi and inter the body, Thursday (He died Wed. night)

they:

• Dug a square hole maybe 5 feet wide and 8 feet deep/

• Made a brick and cement bottom.

• Put up cement walls, maybe 9 inches thick.

• Let the cement dry a few hours.

• Found water leaking in – it rained and there is much ground water

right now. Got bamboo ladder and climbed back in. Removed ladder and

bailed out water for a while, then added another layer of bricks and

cement. Climbed out.

• Then Venkataraman's body was carried over to the Samadhi. They had

put ropes in it.

• They lifted the body onto the rope and lowered it into the Samadhi.

• Then they started to fill the Samadhi

o First are layers of salt and camphor, to dry and preserve (mummify)

the body.

o Then layers or sand and `crushed brick. We saw several women earlier

in the day with a pile of bricks, breaking them into pieces with some

kind of a mallet.

o Then when filled, they top it with slabs of stone.

o Then they built a small shelter over it with a roof. This is

temporary until the final shrine is build over it. .

o They then put up a small temporary altar, and will keep it decorated

each day with fresh flowers.

Not two,

Richard
