Also Japa is recommended strongly by many Gurus. There is one Upanishad, (if i remember correctly it is called " Kaliyugopanishad " ), which states that the mantra " Hare Rama Hare Rama, Rama Rama Hare Hare, Hare Krishna Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna Hare Hare " is the most powerful Mantra for Kali Yuga. Often intellect will be a hurdle for Self-realisation, IMHO. May be the repetitive mantra chanting do really rewire the neuronal pathways, it is the trend of the rational mind to find out a reason for all esoteric experiences.
