Guest guest
Sri Bhagavan observed, while descending from the Hill : " Being of the nature of Bliss why does one continue to crave for happiness ? To be rid of that craving is itself Salvation. The Scriptures say, 'You Are That ' . The imparting of that Wisdom is their purpose. The realisation must be by your finding out who you are and abiding as THAT, i.e., your SELF. To be repeating, 'I am that' or 'not this' is a waste of time. For the worthy disciple, the work lies within himself and not without. Guest guest
Dear Alan, Understanding the desire for happiness is so important in practice. Nome talks about this (as well as Sri Ramana). One thing he has pointed out is that vasana-s have as their core this same search for happiness. It is just misplaced, trying to get happiness from the objective, which comes and goes, rather than the happiness that is the nature of the Self. Also, in the teaching of SADHANA CHATUSHTAYA, the 'Four Means', first is viveka - discrimination (seeing what is real and what is not), next is Vairagya - dispassion or detachment. Nome teaches that key to this detachment is the certainty as to the source of happiness. One will never detach ones self from what they see as the source of happiness. so as long as happiness is thought to be the result of some object experience, whether gross or subtle, then looking into the source of happiness can be very worthwhile. These words echo Raman's teaching on happiness, 'Every living being desires always to be happy.' This is so important that it is how most versions of Ramana's 'Who am I?' start.
