Dear Friends,

Sri Ganesan, great grand nephew of Sri Bhagavan, and past Editor of the Mountain

Path for 30 years is now currently in the USA. He has sent me a synopsis of a

recent talk which may interest members. He gives satsang in Tiru every morning

Mon-Fri at 9:30 when in India.

>

> Namaskar.

>

> The following is a Synopsis of my talk at the AHAM Centre,

> Asheboro, delivered on the 29th July.

Sri Ganesan

>

> ------

>

>

> " THERE ARE NO OTHERS "

>

> With prayers in my Heart, I would like to share with you on

> an

> important aspect of Bhagavan Ramana's " Direct

> Teaching " .

> I felt it would be better if I quoted two illuminating

> statements,

> based on which I could develope the theme of my talk.

>

> ( 1 ) " Attain the " TRUTH " first, and all

> shall be added unto you. "

>

> -- JESUS

> CHRIST

>

> ( 2 ) " It is not a question whether there is a

> " God " apart from you,

> but it is a question whether there is a

> " you " apart from God ! "

> --

> ARTHUR OSBORNE

>

>

> What is that 'Truth', attaining which 'all

> else' will be gained ?

>

> " God made man in His image " , is a powerful

> Biblical statement.

> The 'image' refers to His very Being. To Moses,

> God Himself

> declared his 'name' [ " image " ] as

> " I AM " . Sri Bhagavan once

> observed that wherever, in any scriptures, a word is

> repeated

> twice, it was with a purpose to emphasise the Truth behind

> it.

> Thus, " I AM THAT I AM " reveals the truth behind

> the Eternal

> Truth of " I AM " !

>

> Bhagavan Ramana was ever rooted in " I AM " ,

> from the age

> of sixteen for the next fifty-four years ! He was most

> active

> in his day-to-day activities, as well -- cutting

> vegetables,

> cooking, answering questions, attending to correspondences

> on matter spiritual, walking, talking, acting -- almost,

> all

> twenty-four hours ! A huge Ashram grew around him !

> Seated, unmoved from Arunachala, he effected an

> 'awakening'

> to the Truth, all over the world ! Can there be any better

> example than his life itself, to prove " all shall be

> added

> unto you " ? Bhagavan Ramana longed for nothing and

> he owned nothing; yet, everything was " added " !

>

> Much of human energy has been exerted, centuries

> after centruies, searching for God ! It is and it will be

> a never ending search, so long as one holds God

> separate from oneself. Bhagavan Ramana declared that

> God is one's own nature and is ever existing. One,

> however,

> has to search for the 'one' who searches for God.

> One

> who searches is ever the 'known' . " Knowing

> the known,

> the mystery of the 'Unknown' [God] is

> unravelled " , he said.

> Again, " God pervades everywhere, including the one who

> searches for Him " . Hence, the teaching: " Find

> out who

> the 'one' is. Finding whom God is realised " .

>

> The apparent opposites -- like, day & night, light

> & darkness,

> male & female, life & death -- truly, do not

> nullify each other;

> but only confirm and complement the reality behind them,

> perhaps, with redoubled emphasis. From this angle, look at

> Bhagavan Ramana's 'Direct Teaching' .

>

> The main stream of his 'Direct Teaching' runs on

> the

> two rails of : " Who Am I ? " and " There are

> no others " .

> I like to call them as the two sides of the same coin !

> The truth of " REALITY " , repeated twice !

>

> The importance of and the need for total focus on the

> teaching of " Who Am I ? " has repeatedly been

> emphasised.

> It is quite evident that all over the world a spiritual

> awakening

> is taking place as to know who one really IS. Self-Enquiry

> paves the way to such awareness to one's existence.

> The " intellectual " conviction of the Truth that

> is

> taking place, though undeniable, needs completion and

> fulfilment in one's own " experiencing " the

> Truth !

>

> Perhaps, it is the time for us to look deeply into the

> other

> aspect of the Truth [the other side of the coin] :

> " There

> are no others " .

>

> Though the words : " No others " , sound like and

> appear to be

> negative in their content [like the pairs of opposites we

> saw

> above] , they take one directly to experiencing positively

> the " Higher Power " as one's own existence !

> Such

> eperiencing is the 'completion' of the Self-Enquiry

> !

> The fulfilment of and answer for 'Who Am I ?'

>

> Through Self-Enquiry, when knows that the " I AM "

> is the

> Truth, beyond the limitations of one's 'body'

> and 'mind',

> simultaneously one experiences that the " I AM " is

> the Higher Power [God] ! Thus, 'no others' begins

> with the understanding that one's body and mind

> themselves are the 'others' ! Immersed in

> Silence

> of Self-Absorption one 'experiences' the truth

> behind :

> 'There are no others' -- not as a

> 'statement' but

> truly as one's own 'state' ! Experiencing it

> as a 'state',

> enables one to 'include' everyone and everything --

> including his own body and mind -- as nothing but

> " That " = the " Higher Power " . Nothing

> is negated --

> everything is included !

>

> Surrendering the 'ego-I' to the Higher Power

> " I AM "

> [the " Inner Guru " , as Bhagavan calls], enables

> one

> to experience that " there is only God " and that

> " there is

> no 'you' to see God as the other " !

>

> Let us drown ourselves in the Ocean of Wisdom of

> Bhagavan Ramana :

>

> " The ego submits only when it recognises the

> Higher Power. Such recognition is surrender or

> submission or self-control. Otherwise, the ego

> remains stuck up, like the image carved on

> a tower making a pretence by its strained look

> and posture, that it is supporting the tower

> on its shoulders. The ego cannot exist without

> the Higher Power. But, it thinks that it acts

> of its own accord. Therefore. the instruction is :

> " Either seek the source of the ego through

> 'Who Am I ?' -- so that it may disappear

> or Surrender to the Higher Power -- that it

> may be struck down. "

>

> * * * * * * * * * * *

>

> " Man owes his movements to another Power,

> whereas he thinks that he does everything

> himself -- just like, a lame man bluffing that,

> were he helped to stand up, he would fight

> and chase away the entire enemy forces !

> Action is impelled by desire; desire arises

> after the rise of the ego; and this ego owes

> its origin to a Higher Power on which its

> existence depends. It cannot remain apart.

> Why, then, prattle : 'I do, I act or I function ?'

> "

>

> * * * * * * * * * * * *

>

> " The Supreme Being is that from which the

> body is born, in which it lives and into which

> it resolves. We, however, think we reside

> within the body. Hence, such instruction

> as 'the all-immanent God resides in the Ether

> of the Heart' is given. The instruction really

> means : 'Look within'. "

>

> * * * * * * * * * * * *

>

> " Whether you recognise the Higher Power or

> not, the scheme of things does not alter. Only

> there is a change of outlook. Why should you

> bear your load on the head when you are

> travelling in a train ? It carries you and your

> load whether the load is on your head or

> on the floor of the train. You are not lessening

> the burden of the train by keeping it

> on your head, but only straining yourself,

> unnecessarily. Similar is the sense of doership

> in the world by the individuals. "

>

> * * * * * * * * * * * *

>

> " The Higher Power knows what to do and

> how to do it. Trust IT. "

>

> * * * * * * * * * * * * *

>

> " If you surrender to the Higher Power all is well.

> That Power sees your affairs through. "
