Guest guest
VASANAS - CONTINUED From Padamalai- a superb book containing the advanced teaching of Sri Bhagavan for mature Sadhaks by Muruganar. Muruganar was a great Tamil Poet. He became Self realised through Bhagavan Ramana Maharshi. He usually sat near Bhagavan when Ramana gave Darshan to Ashram Devotees and answered their questions. He noted down all Bhagavan's utterances and then wrote them in poetic aphoristic form in a major work called Padamalai, which means 'A Garland For Padam'. Padam lierally means 'the foot' and is intentended to mean 'the feet of the Guru' or Bhagavan himself. This book which many regard as to be of scriptural status was edited by David Godman and translated by the Tamil scholars Robert Butler and Dr.T.V.Venkatasubra manian. Up to now it cannot be downloaded from the web, but can be ordered from Ramanasramam Book Depot or it is available from Amazon USA and UK. This reading is from the Chapter entitled Advice on Sadhana, under the sub heading Vasanas. P.246-7 Vasanas Vasanas are mental tendencies; the latent desires and feelings that compel one to behave in a particular way. (Padamalai Glossary) At a more fundamental level vasanas are the cause of both manifestation and rebirth. According to Bhagavan, it is the vasanas that impel the mind to project and witness an illusory world. At the time of death, the uneradicated vasanas withdraw into the heart where they remain latent for a while before bringing into existence a new body and a new world. THE DESTRUCTION OF ALL VASANAS IS EQUATED WITH SELF-REALISATION SINCE, IN THAT STATE, THERE IS NO REBIRTH AND NO ILLUSORY, PROJECTED WORLD. PADAMALAI p.35. NOTE BY DAVID GODMAN. FROM PADAMALAI P.247 85 Unless the destruction of [all] vasanas is accomplished, it will not be possible even for Iswara to bestow the state of liberation. 86 The felicitous state of immovable peace that never falters will be attainable only to those who have destroyed the ancient multitude of vasanas, putting an end to all attachment. Question: Since realisation is not possible without vasanakshaya [destruction of vasanas], how am I to realise that state in which the vasanas are effectively destroyed? Bhagavan: You are in that state now! Question: Does it mean that by holding on to the Self, the vasanas should be destroyed as and when they emerge/ Bhagavan: They will themselves be destroyed if you remain as you are. Guest guest
Hello Friend Allan The eradication of man tendencies happens when man loses AMBITION. I rembember the Zen Master Ryokan saying in a poem: " Too lazy to be ambitious, I let the world take care of itself. Ten days' worth of rice in my bag a bundle of twigs by the fireplace. Why chatter about delusion and enlightenment? Listening to the night rain on my roof, I sit comfortably, with both legs stretched out.
