Song for Nobody

By Thomas Merton(1915 - 1968)

A yellow flower(Light and spirit)Sings by itselfFor nobody.A golden spirit(Light and emptiness)Sings without a wordBy itself.Let no one touch this gentle sunIn whose dark eyeSomeone is awake.(No light, no gold, no name, no colorAnd no thought:O, wide awake!)A golden heavenSings by itselfA song to nobody.

The peace we cultivate within ourselvesflows outward. And in the same waythe suffering we allow in otherscreeps into our own lives.

Hi Alan -I thought we'd continue on Wednesday theme of color and transcending color...(No light, no gold, no name, no colorAnd no thought:O, wide awake!)--Thomas Merton was a Catholic monk and mystic who, perhaps more than anyone else in the 20th century, is associated with opening up a dialog between the spiritual traditions of East and West. He himself studied many Eastern spiritual practices deeply, particularly Zen Buddhist meditation and philosophy. He is best known today for his essays on the spiritual life, especially his first book, The Seven Storey Mountain, but he was also a gifted poet. Many of his later poems reflect his own mystical awakening.A golden heavenSings by itselfA song to nobody.Ivan
