Guest guest
Hello, I wonder if anyone has any current information re: the holy hill in Tiru. I was there in November/December and there was warning from the ashram not to walk alone on the hill, but to go in groups as there was an armed robber(s) who were pretty dangerous. It saddened me then, and I wanted some current info. regarding this. Thanks, Sita
Guest guest
Dear Sita, My wife and I live in Tiruvannamalai. I think they may have caught the culprit. I have also seen occasional Forest Department 'guards,' that have been deployed (mainly sitting at Skandashram). I think it is still recommended that woman go accompanied. I have seen, though, many times, women proceeding singly, both up to Skandashram and on the Inner (and Outer) Paths. You need to do what seems safe and comfortable for you. My wife and I have gone up and round (on the inner path) more than 100 times in the last year and have never had any trouble. Maybe it is because I am a big (though getting old) guy. I am not sure of specifics, Maybe I can find our more. Guest guest
Thanks Richard, I always walk alone on the hill as well, without any trouble. Still, in November they were making such a big deal about it and posting signs throughout Ramanashram, at the shoe stall, etc. and I understand even the stalwarts were feeling ruffled by this. There were some very bad stories being reported, and I guess that's why the Forest Dept. guards have been employed. I must say in this regard, though, that when I first visited Tiru in 1988 and walked alone on the hill one young man became concerned and decided to chaparogne me to the various caves, which I appreciated, saying that women shouldn't walk alone. Although I protested a little at first that this is a holy place, it brings to mind the story of the elephant stampeding down the road. One man was warned of a mad elephant stampeding down the road. He exclaimed, " Why should I worry, the elephant is God " . Alas, when he was crushed by the elephant, one other man told him, " Yes, surely God is in the elephant, but God was also in the one who warned you! " So it's a story about discrimination. I have to admit, after the stories of the armed robber(s) came out, I stopped going up the hill. Anyway, how wonderful that you live in Tiru. That's so lucky for you. I hope you're doing well, and if you hear anything more about the subject of the armed robber, please let me know. I hope to return in a few months for another visit.
