Guest guest
Dear Harsha best greeting from my wife Sylvia she does not feel to be in a position to write an article about this indeed complex matter; being herself just 3 months not only a socalled vegetarian, but a vegan; and one who does not use sugar, salt and fat in any quantity. all those ingredients of food being in the long run harmful as this matter is a point of so many conflicts because people tend to be dogmatic in every way this too is a source of ongoing misunderstandings. Having been myself between others professions for decades a pharmaceutical representative working for the biggest companies i know medicine etc to be a battlefield in order just to earn instead of really be of help. This was a big disappointment for this person - but a wonderful lesson to learn; but difficult indeed to absorb. Like the lesson to look always in myself to the position of the "neutral nontjudging observer"... Having lived and worked in different countries in different continents with my spirituality hidden and unknown or known i have to state: everywhere the same situation. Instead of LOVE love GD spirituality MONEY and false security is the boss. But this was always so - as i learned this hard lesson and has to be finally accepted without suffering.... Living now in one of the most poor countries in europa, hungary, and realizing that this poorness is not only due to history and character of the population with its karma, but indeed due to the profiting of the multis which use this country as a milking cow. Attending checkup in hospitals gave me the opportunity to see in practice how greedy some docs are and how wonderful others are, without the means to theoretical help but the means of staying near to the sick - till the moment where their socalled security is endangered. And something else i learned all this decades and was taught this by a very evolved soul, a hungarian jewis psychiater, who taught us: enter a big room darken it and at the end of the room put a candle, light it: the light you see by this tiny candle in this big room is what we know about our brain, our inner being etc. And never forget this, when working with docs. They do not know it - you should know it. Regarding food and nutrition and health as stated some weeks before: both of us reduced our blood pressure medication dramatically and me my diabetes II. Having informed nice and intelligent docs: its incredible they did not know that this is possible Sylvia sends you the best greeting and whenever she feels in an inner position to write about B12 and nutrition she will do it. In the meantime she hopes her links was of some help for you. B12 is the most chemically complex of all the vitamins. Foods Vitamin B12 is naturally found in meat (especially liver and shellfish), milk and eggs. Animals, in turn, must obtain it directly or indirectly from bacteria, and these bacteria may inhabit a section of the gut which is posterior to the section where B12 is absorbed. Thus, herbivorous animals must either obtain B12 from bacteria in their rumens, or (if fermenting plant material in the hindgut) by reingestion of cecotrope fæces. Eggs are often mentioned as a good B12 source, but they also contain a factor that blocks absorption.[31] Certain insects such as termites contain B12 produced by their gut bacteria, in a manner analogous to ruminant animals.[32] An NIH Fact Sheet lists a variety of food sources of vitamin B12. According to the U.K. Vegan Society, the present consensus is that any B12 present in plant foods is likely to be unavailable to humans and so these foods should not be relied upon as safe sources, as the B12 analogues can compete with B12 and inhibit metabolism. Also, vegan humans who eat only plant based foods must ordinarily take special care to supplement their diets accordingly. The only reliable vegan sources of B12 are foods fortified with B12 (including some soy products and some breakfast cereals), and B12 supplements.[33] While lacto-ovo vegetarians usually get enough B12 through consuming dairy products, vitamin B12 may be found to be lacking in those practicing vegan diets who do not use multivitamin supplements or eat B12 fortified foods. Examples of fortified foods often consumed include fortified breakfast cereals, fortified soy-based products, and fortified energy bars. Claimed sources of B12 that have been shown through direct studies[34] of vegans to be inadequate or unreliable include laver (a seaweed), barley grass, and human gut bacteria. People on a vegan raw food diet are also susceptible to B12 deficiency if no supplementation is used[35]. [edit] Natural food sources of B12 Vitamin B12 is found in foods that come from animals, including fish, meat, poultry, eggs, milk, and milk products.[36] One half chicken breast provides some .3 µg per serving or 6.0% of one's daily value (DV), 3 ounces of beef, 2.4 µg, or 40% of one's DV, one slice of liver 47.9 µg or 780% of DV, and 3 ounces of Molluscs 84.1 µg, or 1,400 % of DV, while one egg provides .6 µg or 10% of DV. Recommendations The Dietary Reference Intake for an adult ranges from 2 to 3 µg (micrograms) per day. Vitamin B12 is believed to be safe when used orally in amounts that do not exceed the recommended dietary allowance (RDA). The RDA for vitamin B12 in pregnant women is 2.6 µg per day and 2.8 µg during lactation periods. There is insufficient reliable information available about the safety of consuming greater amounts of Vitamin B12 during pregnancy. The Vegan Society, the Vegetarian Resource Group, and the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, among others, recommend that vegans either consistently eat foods fortified with B12 or take a daily or weekly B12 supplement.[33][47][48] Fortified breakfast cereals are a particularly valuable source of vitamin B12 for vegetarians and vegans. In addition, adults age 51 and older are recommended to consume B12 fortified food or supplements to meet the RDA, because they are a population at an increased risk of deficiency [49]. Guest guest
Dear Michael, Thanks for the links and please thank Sylvia your wife for thinking of us. Vitamin B12 is needed by vegans. I am a lacto-ovo vegetarian and so generally get vitamin b12 from my diet. Also, there are a lot of good supplements available. At times, I go on a vegan diet for long periods. So supplementation can be helpful. The weight can be controlled and lost through proper nutrition as you know. Each person must find what foods work best for them. Life style changes are very helpful in all this. Congratulations on managing your type 2 diabetes. That is really wonderful Michael. Nutrition and exercise are a big part of it. Flaxseeds and walnuts have a lot of omega 3 which I have heard is good for the heart. Probably most important is to eat moderately. That is what Sri Krishna advises to Arjuna.
