PADAM THE HEART

Padamalai P. 35

17

PADAM, THE hEART, THE EXPANSIVE ABODE, POSSESSES SUCH GREAT STRENGTH THAT THE

SIX BANEFUL ENEMIES CANNOT EVEN APPROACH.

The six enemies are lust, anger, greed, delusion, intoxication, and envy.

........

Note: Padamalai is the advanced teaching of Sri Bhagavan as given to Muruganar

before his eventual Self Realisation, and recorded by him in Tamil verse, edited

and translated by David Godman and Robert Butler in aphoristic form. Padam means

the Foot of the Guru and Bhagavan in the Heart. AJ

Padam, pure consciousness, demands that everything that has been learned as

knowledge has to be completely forgotten as ignorance.

> Remaining in the Heart, Padam causes the minds of each and

> every one to act in accordance with his [or her] vasanas.

>      Vasanas are the habits or tendencies of the mind,

> such as likes and dislikes, that make it behave the way it

>      At a more fundamental level vasanas are the cause

> Bhagavan, it is the vasanas that impel the mind to project

> and witness an illusory world. At the time of death, the

> uneradicated vasanas withdraw into the Heart where they

> remain latent for a while before bringing into existence a

> new body and a new world. The destruction of all vasanas is

> equated with Self-Realisation since, in that stae, there is

> no rebirth and no illusory, projected world.

Padam is God to those who are caught in concepts, but to the true jnani, who is

without falsity and who has separated from all concepts, it is his own Self.
