From the Garland of Gurus Sayings

Verse 259. The ego

(seer) is unreal; this world of objects seen is

also unreal; the mind that is aware of the two is (also)

unreal; only the Sky of Pure Consciousness remains over (in

Self-Realization) as real. (17)

(17) Whatever is manifested and

taken as real in ignorance has to be related to a cause or

original source; the Real Self is unrelated; all

attempts to trace phenomenal objects to IT are bound to be

unsatisfactory, as is well known to those who do not

to any of the creeds, and who are therefore called

" Advaitins. "

Verse 259 (Footnote 17 cont'd).

>

> Hence, a hypothetical Source is posited, which is called

> Maya (Illusion) by the latter, and Mula Prakriti

> (basic, root nature) by certain others (suffering from or)

> with credulity. That Maya is unreal is

> neatly set forth in the book called Yoga Vasishtha

> in the following verse:

>

> " Oh Rama, such is this

> Maya, who confers happiness by her own

> extinction; what she is in reality is never perceived; for

> when the truth of her is being sought she dies. "
