This is how the planets are posted in the example Mercury, Sun and Mars in 12th house Saturn and Jupiter in 3rd house Moon in 7th house Venus in 11th house. Now lets first try to compute Suns BAV to get Suns total points. Step 1 : Find where planet is in the chart. Sun is in 12th house. Step 2 : We need to find where each planet is in reference to Sun i.e. Read the distribution of points as " If Sun is in 11th place from Moon it will help it (meaning it will give 1 bindu) " So for that we take the BOX where Sun's distribution is given with respect to 7 planets and lagna (hence 8 positions and hence its called Ashtakavarga - Ashta means 8 and varga means planets and lagna). So now lets see how planets help Sun with respect to positions. This is similar to how we see YOGAS in Vedic astrology. Step 3 : To identify which planets help sun or how sun distributes the 48 bindus it has got to distribute to planets and lagna. Step 4 : Lets now break it down into how Sun helps Sun, Moon helps Sun, Mars helps Sun, Mercury helps Sun, Jupiter helps sun, Venus helps sun, Saturn helps sun, and Sun helps Sun. a) Sun helps Sun. Now Take the BOX SUN and see the first Row which says Sun. This means that we are now studying SUN with respect to SUN to see if SUN IS HELPING ITSELF. So we take the distribution of Suns points i.e. 1st row. So Sun/Sun's distribution is (for a dot I am using 1 and for blank I am using 0) which is given in the lesson in Suns Box. So Sun/Sun distributes points as House 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 Sun 1 1 0 1 0 0 1 1 1 1 1 0 Now Sun is in the 12th house. So start from 12th house and distribute points. So take House as House 12 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 Bindu *1 1 0 1 0 0 1 1 1 1 0 1 Basically Begin to plot STARTING FROM THE HOUSE WHERE PLANET IS POSITIONED IN A CHART. HERE SUN IS IN 12 SO START THE DISTRIBUTION FROM 12TH HOUSE. So for 12th house we get Sun giving 1 point to Sun which I have marked with *1. b) Sun/Moon Lets see if Moon helps sun. Sun distributes points to Moon as i.e. SUN'S BAV BOX AND IN IT THE SECOND ROW WHICH IS FOR MOON House 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 Moon 0 0 1 0 0 1 0 0 0 1 1 1 Now check where moon is in the chart. In the example Moon is in 7th house So start the distribution of points from 7th house. House 7 8 9 10 11 12 1 2 3 4 5 6 Bindu 0 0 1 0 0 *1 0 0 0 1 1 1 So here Moon is helping Sun in 12th house. Similary do for all planets and lagna in the BOX for SUN. So if you do that for all 7 planets and lagna and see for Sun, it will have 5. Those would be from lagna, sun, moon, mars and saturn. Similary do the exercise for all planets. There is a worksheet that does compute the same and give results automatically, but its better to understand the same. I am keeping MOONS POINTS SAME IN THE SAME ORDER AND ONLY CHANGING HOUSE NUMBERS. The first example is not an example. It is the real distribution of point. The 2nd is the actual distribution. So If you look in the lesson. This is what you will see for moons in SUN's BAV box. That distribution is given by Maharishi Varharamira and it is fixed and constant. So Varharamira gave whats in the lesson which is. If Moon is in the following places from Sun it will help it and those positions are House 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 Moon 0 0 1 0 0 1 0 0 0 1 1 0 NOW IN THE EXAMPLE IN THE LESSON Moon is in the 7th house and Sun is in the 12th house. If my starting point (house) already has a 1 (point) in it and it is my sun position, do I add another point at that spot for the sun? example: Sun is in the second house.
