A rule-of-thumb for understanding the Moon is given by its phases and

brightness. The brighter the Moon is, the stronger it becomes while

the darker it becomes, the weaker it gets. A dark moon is considered

a malefic indicative of a mind which, to some degree or other, doubts

itself, worries, exaggerates, is indecisive, without determination,

prone to phobias, paranoid to some degree and which lacks that " go-

ahead " spirit which the full moon would impart (other considerations

notwithstanding).

On the other hand, when the Moon is bright, and especially when it is

full, it indicates a strong and healthy mind. Shil Ponde, in his book

Hindu Astrology- Jyotish Shastra, sums it up very nicely by

saying " The Shukla-paksha (bright moon) people may not be rich or

even wealthy, but they seem to know what to do to develop what

talents they possess and to enjoy life to the fullest extent,

permitted by the station in life to which they were born. They have

the power to rise in life through their own efforts " (P - 206). This

is the basic idea behind a bright moon; it gives a positive mind,

good memory and a stable emotional base.
