Guest guest
Respected Guruji, Ashji, Anupji and Members Many times we have had a problem when a member forgets or gives a wrong Time Zone of a place. Here is the write-up on How to Calculate Time Zone. **************************************The earth completes one full rotation ie 3600 on its axis in about 24 hrs or 24 * 60 = 1440 min. That means3600 = 1440 min 10 = 1440 / 360 = 4 minThis means it requires earth to rotate 10 in 4 min 10 = 4 min or 60’ = 4 min or 60’ = 4 * 60 sec or 1’ = 4 sec Now in astrological terms we would say that Sun rotates 10 around Earth in 4 min.The meridian passing through the Greenwich near London is chosen as the 00 Longitude or the reference point for finding the longitudes of all places on earth. According to the formula given above ----The geographical longitude of the standard meridian for India = 820 30’ E Multiplying this by 4 we get (as 10 is equal to 4 min and 1’ is equal to 4 sec) = 820 * 4 min: 30’ * 4 sec = 328 min : 120 sec = 328 + 2 = 330 min = 330 / 60 = 5 hrs 30 min So we can deduce, anytime we want to find the Time Zone of a place we have to multiply the longitude of the place by 4 and divide the result by 60. Let me give examples to understand the above principles.1. Find the Time Zone of Delhi [77013’ E] = 77 * 4 min : 13 * 4 sec = 308 min : 52 sec = 308 min (Approx.) = 308 / 60 = 5 hrs 6 min Since 5 hrs 6 min is closer to IST 5 hr 30 min so the Time Zone is – IST 5:30 2. Find the Time Zone of Patna [85008’E] = 85 * 4 min : 8 * 4 sec = 340 min : 32 sec = 340 min (Approx.) = 340 / 60 = 5 hrs 36 min Since 5 hrs 36 min is closer to IST 5 hr 30 min so the Time Zone is – IST 5:30 3. Find the Time Zone of El Paso, Texas [106029’ W] = 106 * 4 min : 29 * 4 sec = 424 min : 116 sec = 424 + 2 = 426 min (Approx.) = 426 / 60 = 7 hrs 6 min Since 7 hrs 6 min is closer to 7 hrs, so the Time Zone will be 7 hrs. Texas being West of Greenwich, we will take the Time Zone as +7.00 ie MST +7.00. 4. Find the Time Zone of Los Angeles [118017’ W] = 118 * 4 min : 17 * 4 sec = 472 min : 68 sec = 473 min (Approx) = 473 / 60 = 7 hrs 42 min Since 7 hrs 42 min is closer to 8 hrs, so the Time Zone will be 8 hrs. Los Angeles being West of Greenwich, we will take the time as +8.00 ie PST +8.00. In our KAS software, any place that is in the East of Greenwich the Time Zone will be in negative like say any place in India, the Time Zone will be – IST 5:30. Likewise any place West of Greenwich, the Time Zone will be positive. These Time zones are always with a difference of 30 min except for Nepal which has Time Zone as NPT – 5 hr 45 min.************************************ ThanksPrabha
