Guest guest
The soul may choose some specific physical traits or diseases as a way of learning a lesson; whatever else happens in life, however, is likely to have less to do with one's genes than with the social, historic, and political circumstances of one's incarnation. In some cases, whether a disease manifests or not depends on the external circumstances of our lives--diet, stress, a sedentary lifestyle, etc. may trigger that condition that is " in our genes " . Conversely, if we eat right, exercise, and have a jolly disposition, we may never activate those genes. The availability of medical treatment also has an enormous impact on the quality of life after the onset of an ailment (some disease that are chronic nowadays would kill a patient in a matter of months just a century ago). Additionally, equally harsh karmic lessons at the physical level may be learned through diseases that are not genetic, or as the result of accidental injuries. In summary: genes determine physical traits, but even then our bodies--not to mention our psychological, cultural, and spiritual selves--are the result of processes and events that are so much more complex than the biochemical recipe we inherit from our parents. I recall we used to have a physician in our newsgroup. It would be interesting to hear her or his views...
