ego (What is ego?)

So I ask the Jury ...what is ego?

Ego as defined in the Siddha Yoga Dictionary -says:

" Ego: In yoga, the limited sense of " I " that is identified with the

body, mind, and senses; sometimes described as " the veil of

suffering. "

So Ego would be focus on self vs. focus on stuff like spiritual and

others needs, yes????

Wouldn't the wild animal be totally focused on self?

Focused on survival/sexual gratification/ shelter/food...stuff like

that?

Maybe we are like the wild animals and just don't realize it yet...

Get me a burger and my woman in the cozy shelter of my den...

ROOOWWWWLLLL!

:) :) :)

access to a form of genetic memory known to us as instinct. is it

possible for us humans to access this memory of ourselves? of course

the ego sees this possibility as terrifying. and what might non-egoic

thought accomplish?

i like krishnamurti's take on ego rather than the dictionary's. he proposes that

all thought is generated by the ego. the reason why i see nature as egoless, is

that a certain balance had been maintained throughout all species until the

spread of modern humans (cancer of the planet). but she'll survive us.

in my opinion you're confusing the desire nature and the personality

with ego (which is the real conscious and reasoning self). Ego is the

intellectual principle of selfhood, it only becomes selfish in

connection with the personality and desire nature, and becomes a

tyrant when disconnected from reason (which is its root-principle).

not really. the animal basically is stimulus- and response-driven.

to the animal an 'emotion' is a disturbance of a natural state of

balance or contentment, a signal that something needs to be done.

we're the idiots that drive experience in order to create an emotional

reward or punishment for ourselves, and indulge those experiences.

this basically just puts us on the perpetual hedonic treadmill that

most people call life.

cheers,

-brian

Stephen,

You're misspelling ego. It should be eggo.
