My name is Dave and I heard about this group through the thoughtfulness

of a guy at another group, Kundalini Yoga, which I joined earlier

this week. I posted the following there:

 

Hi everybody, I am wondering if any of you can shed some light on a

development I'm experiencing. I began to practice a form of Kundalini

meditation a few days ago. I've been interested in meditation per se for

a few years but have never settled into a regular and committed

practice. Last weekend I found the Kundalini Yoga website and

immediately felt drawn to it. I'm still finding my way around the site

and slowly absorbing some of the background to and principles of KY.

Meanwhile, I remembered that I had a copy of The Five Tibetans by

Christopher Kilham, so I picked it up and found the section where he

gives a description of a beginner Kundalini chakra meditation. For those

of you who haven't read it, he suggests a half hour meditation which

begins with a basic 'settling into' a meditative state, then develops

into a focused meditation on each of the chakras, starting at muladhara

and progressing upwards through each of the others. He recommends

bringing the attention to each chakra for about 3 minutes and breathing

regularly but not particularly deeply into each energy centre. I

began the practice on Monday. I'm not the world's best meditator (!) and

so far have only been able to get as far as the throat centre (once!)

but I'm persisting because I know it's a matter of practice. My

difficulty has been in processing what 'comes up', particularly in the

solar plexus area (a great deal of repressed anger). But hey, that's my

stuff! What I'm curious to know is, would following this type of

meditation produce a 'ringing' in my left ear all of a sudden? Because I

was woken by it on Tuesday night, and then while I was at work yesterday

it returned and hasn't really gone away. I'm now aware that it's

basically there full-time, and while it's not disturbingly loud, it

occasionally increases in pitch and intensity. It's kind of like a sonic

whine, I don't really know how to describe it. Obviously I've wondered

about tinnitus, but there is no history of any problems like that in my

family as far as I'm aware, and I've certainly never experienced

anything like it before (except a couple of times after loud concerts

and the like, which goes away within a few hours.) Could the meditation

practice have sparked something like this? If I know it's likely to

pass, I won't worry about it. Otherwise, I need to think about getting

it checked out. Coming across KY at the weekend seems like a stage on

a path for me, because I've been Reiki Level II attuned for two and a

half years now and so have been working with the chakras in that way for

some time. I have to say, however, that I'm finding this meditation

practice particularly powerful. I'd be grateful if anybody feels they

can shed some light on this.

 

 

Since posting that, the noise in my ear has quietened down somewhat but

is still there. I'm not disturbed by it, I simply find it interesting at

this point and I can live with it so far. In fact, it's only really when

I bring my attention to it that I remember it's there, so it's better

than it was at first. I'd still appreciate any insights you guys might

have into this, though, and I'd love to hear about any similar

experiences you have had.

 

I'm really at the very beginning with Kundalini, just starting to find

out about it and trying to discipline myself to practice the meditation

regularly. I did practice the Tibetans for a while a couple of years

back, but then I had an accident which frightened me and I stopped doing

them. I remember feeling at the time that I'd generated an energy that I

couldn't manage properly and that's why I'd ended up in considerable

pain for 2 or 3 weeks, but I'm thinking of trying to practice them again

very soon.

 

I'd be very grateful if someone could advise me on how to make best use

of my membership here as this and the Kundalini Yoga group are the only

groups I've ever belonged to, and I'm not sure quite how they

work.

welcomingly. I'm looking forward to being an active member here and

sharing my Kundalini adventure with everybody. Right now, I don't really

know where I'm headed with this, but I'm happy to be in the company of

the people who post here.
