Guest guest
Good morning, good day, children of Shakti! My headache is gone, leaving only a residual soreness. Taking my daughter to school today, I was listening to a new CD I got called " The Dance of Shakti " , a modern music variation of Indian mantra and some original music. (I love the world music...all kinds!). So I'm listening to this CD, have dropped my daughter off and am going home. At a stop light I'm looking quickly at the liner notes and the next song is called " Mangalam " . It says it's based on a mantra about the auspiciousness of the elements, singing of earth, water, fire, wind, our Earth, the Sun, Moon and Space. It's repetitive, speeding up near the end and has thunder and flute for birds and ends with the sound of a rainstorm. As the song played, my body broke out in huge goosebumps, a nice, cold feeling went through me, my heart lept with joy and tears flowed. It was beautiful! I'm glad my daughter didn't see this or she would have thought something was wrong but everything was right! If any of you know the words and translation to this mantra I would LOVE to know them. I can sort of make it out from the CD but not very well. I want to learn and sing this mantra. This is what I think I'm hearing, phonetically, Saga mama...madadi damadi...asamidama dama gama gaday--(? don't understand)...saga sami, saneea.. (flute, sitar, tabla, chimes, bells) uumee mangalam ulleema mangalam ahkee mangalam iya mangalam gahgayna mangalam jaygata mangalam suleea mangalam jandah mangalam... Saga mama...(repeats faster) Thanks for listening to me bliss-out! Love and hugs, Valarie

Guest guest
Dear Valarie, In Indian classical music the seven notes are denoted as Sa Ree Ga Ma Pa Dha Nee (Similar to the Do, Re, Mee . . . . ) Some songs are exclusively composed of these notes sung vocally. Some lyrics are a mixture of the 'Saptha Swaras' (Seven notes) and other meaning full words. Some music is composed of only meaning full words. What you wrote initially is a combination of the seven notes. . . Sa Ga Ma Ma . . . . etc. " Mangalam " in Sanskrit and in most Indian languages means " Auspicious " - for eg. a wedding is an auspicious occassion. Like the wish " Good Day to You " , in Sanskrit " Mangalam Bavathu " - May good things happen to you. Mangalam indicates many good things, like a combination of good health, prosperity, Happiness etc. You wrote 'uumee', this is probably 'Bhoomi " meaning earth. Listen carefully and confirm. 'Jayagata' is probably, 'Jagat' - world. 'Gahgayna' is probably 'Gagana' meaning Sky. I am unable to decipher other words you have written. Valeri, i am thrilled to read that you enjoyed this music. I can send you, as gift, free of charge, CDRoms containing chanting of Mantras etc. Please write to me. With regards Venugopal, Bombay.
