Guest guest
The sticky point here is how to strike a fine balance between tradition and innovation. Anthropologists and historians have demonstrated that what people consider " traditions " are in fact discourses and practices that keep being reinvented at every stage of their social life. So is pranayama, and so is any other " traditional " spiritual practice. Even what we call " yoga " today is hardly a monolithic set of ideas and prescriptions. Rather, it's a complex discourse with a variety of perspectives, many of which are explicitly at odds with each other. To me, the key here is to a. document oneself and accrue as much intellectual (or better theoretical) knowledge on the topic as possible, b. to cautiously explore various techniques to see what works and what doesn't, and c. to always, always, use one's discernment to assess what is appropriate and what is not.
