Hey Claudia,

Just got home........Yes, I loved eighth grade history and the poem

" Evangeline " .  It is such a haunting picture of swamps, bayous, spanish moss,

with traces of religion and Louisiana culture.  We are a unique state, and a

unique people.  What side of Cross Lake did you live on?  I grew up on the north

side, and lived on the south side most recently.  Some of my best memories were

catching bream with my grandfather.  I remember catching the little perch,

taking them off the hook, and giving them a kiss before I gently placed them

back in the water.  Yeah Yeah, I know.  I couldn't even put a minnow or worm on

a hook these days; but back in those days, it was great fun to be out there with

the egrets.  Again, I remember snakes falling into the boat, and my grandfather

just reaching down with his paddle and lifting them out of the boat back into

the water.  I went to Northwood High School; and yes, I am sure that I am as old

as you, and probably,

most assuredly older.  My maiden name was Tingle.  Mike  and Patti were

cousins.  How long have you been gone, and do you ever get back?

So good to talk to you and (re) connect.  Who knows? Maybe we are distantly

related?

Ever sit on a levee on a Friday night and watch the stars and listen to the

crickets?

Great fun!!!

Namaste,

Julie

Wow! My dad and mom grew up in Shreveport and no fewer than 26

members of both their families attended Centenary... descendents are

STILL attending. And Cross Lake?!?! I lived on Cross Lake for about

7 months with my first husband before that marriage ended in

divorce! Used to fish on the lake regularly. Can't believe how

close a connection we have!

I agree about New Orleans. I lived there from 3rd grade through

middle of junior year in high school. I wanted to be an artist. So,

if you can imagine, as a 12-year-old girl, I would get on a public

bus and ride alone to the French Quarter with my paints and an easel

and roam around the Quarter watching the artists, then set up my

easel and paint alongside them. That was in the early 60s...it was

simply the most interesting and colorful city imaginable.. .and the

food!! I still make red beans and rice, shrimp creole, gumbo, and

other N.O. dishes!!

I remember learning a lot of local history in school...I was

especially enchanted with the story of the Acadians and

Evangeline.. .and as far as education, the system when I was growing

up there was VERY good...I got a very strong, broad, liberal arts

education that served me well through college AND graduate school. I

wouldn't trade my childhood and young adulthood in Louisiana for

anything, it's a rich heritage that I treasure.

So glad to meet you Julie and to discover we share a background in

and a love for Louisiana!

Blessings & love,

Claudia

Centenary College.  It is such a beuatiful state, rich with

heritage.  You have gone even " deeper south " .  I love the southern

drawls.  Yes, I have been missing Louisiana a little.  It is a state,

despite poor economy and education, that people seldom leave.  And if

they do leave, a part of their heart stays.  I grew up in a time

where New Orleans was such a wonderful place to visit, or maybe it

was through a child's eyes.  We went every year, and my parents would

get all dressed up and walk through the French Quarter, eating at

beautiful dark places with chandeliers and exquisite courtyards

dripping with bougainvilla and tropical greenery.  Funny, I was

sitting on my balcony this morning visiualizing a bougainvilla

hanging basket.  Better take care of that today.  People who have not

lived in Louisiana cannot conceive of the hospitality and mindset,

the cajun music and dancing, and

> the GUMBO!!!!  So we are connected through two sources

now......... kundalini awakening and Louisiana-borne.

>

> My last home in La. was on Cross Lake with a pier, and a cypress

tree growing in the water next to the deck.  One day I was sitting on

the pier, and felt like someone was watching me.  I turned around and

in the tree about 3 feet away from me were no less than 11 water

snakes, lying on the branches, eyes fixated on me.  Needless to say,

I overcame my fear of snakes through shock therapy.  As I sat there,

frozen with fear, I realized they weren't going to jump out of the

trees and bite me.  So after about 40 years of being terrified of the

slitherers, I came to be at peace with them.  But I didn't swim

there.
