Guest guest
Like most women I have been attached to my hair and how it looks, for most of my life. There is a 'thing' with Black people that the longer your hair, the prettier and 'better' you are. Its a silly thought but based in history as the blacker your skin the less likely you were to have long hair. The lighter skin tones went with longer, softer hair! This was drummed into girls from a young age. Even young boys did not have their hair cut until they are ready for school. Luckily these notions are dying out as our race re-educates itself from the slave mentality. I've been growing my dreadlocks for 20yrs, never cutting them so they are now down to the backs of my knees and are 42ins long. With 60 dreads, that makes it 2,520ins. of hair which is very heavy. On my birthday, August 10th I will be having it cut in aid of charity. Its for Barnardo's Children's Home who looked after me as a baby and then found me wonderful Foster Parents at the age of 18mts old. I have a web page where people can donate or they can donate directly to me. I don't want anything from the group, but I would like you to have a look if you get time. I see this as part of my love and service to others. I don't have money to donate to them myself so I volunteer at their shop and now fund-raise. So no matter how cash poor we are, there are other ways we can help those worse off than ourselves. I would love to hear about others charity work, off post, as we are always looking for new ideas. Thanks for reading and my page is: www.justgiving.com/ionasdreadlocks LS, x

Guest guest
I have also heard about these women who sacrifice their hair in order to get a favour or blessing from the gods. One woman did so when her daughter was very ill and she could not afford the medical bills. She could have sold her hair directly but by sacrifice the gods cured her daughter. Faith can be a wonderful, positive force. So can unconditional love for people you do not know. I thought I would be fretting and sad to say goodbye to my hair, but because it will be doing so much good for children who are in need of love, and understanding, I feel blessed to be able to help them. Thank you all for your kind thoughts.
