While I do think it's Leonardo in drag, I had a bit of a chuckle at the

alchemical explanation. Might be true! Who knows. But it reminds me of a

story of an artist someone told me on Granville Island. The legend goes

that some local art diva came down to appraise his work. Standing there,

she waxed poetic about one particular piece, a deer fawn standing next to

an old shack. She talked about the juxtaposition between the old and the

new, and the obvious symbolic significance of the piece. Finally, an

observer said " Looks like a deer and a shack to me. "

" You sir, obviously know nothing about art, " she

replied.

" If you say so, " said the man, chuckling under his breath as he

walked away. The punchline? He was the artist who painted it.

We can all find profound symbolism in any piece of truly great artwork,

but there is a danger in assuming we absolutely know what the artist

intended by it. I'm an artist myself, and I have been amazed what people

see in my artwork ... very little of it consciously intended, some

legitimate, some not. There is a lot of projection at work in

interpreting art. Sometimes the interpretation says more about the viewer

than it does about the work of art. And sometimes a deer and a shack is

just a deer and a shack.

Lol Brandy , When I was a kid I had to sit through tons of Mr Peacock

droning lectures about art and alchemy , this one stuck in my head

because

it was about hermaphrodites...made me wake up , out of my trance!

always paid attention when he talked about hermaphrodites..

Once again ~ Good Point Brandi! There have been many projections

on the Mona Lisa and someone told me that he could see a snake

in the painting as well!
