been quite busy. Off topic but I thought some of you would be interested.

I've done certification with a bunch of wireless internet manufacturers.

One company I'm quite close to yelled at me when Ike hit. Up here I've

probably hit every adverse condition you can. So they co-opted me for

tech support. I have some skills, its good to use them.

The idea is rapid, mobile, low power, internet connections in disaster areas.

First responders are not always techs. The equipment was donated, and when

they get where they are going I'm here to help them set it up. We're doing

either hughes.net or wildblue sat feeds into alvarion wireless gear. Low

power , no strain on the generators. No actual copper wire involved.

Satellite up and downlink, and then straight to wireless for laptops PDAs

etc.

Once these guys get it power, I can get into it from here and finish the

config and then monitor it. I've got 8 up so far. Traffic on all is really

heavy.

So sitting on my couch in maine, I'm making a difference. No pay, of

course. Chuckle. Might have to be my next project though, Small, self

powered, internet feed straight to wireless. maybe design something you

could just drop from a chopper.

Anyway no time to read everything here, have to work to.

Those safeties get you every time, service.

I will say the guys I'm talking with on the ground, are saying you have no

idea how bad it is there from the media. Real tension.

Peace

Don

My son-in-law went over to help in Galveston today. He said it is

really bad. Lots of damage.

Definitely nice to see someone doing something. I'm on the power side

of the equation, though I'm not directly involved; I work for a

private distribution and power transformer design, recondition and

manufacturing firm and while we do not " donate " equipment we see a lot

of business from emergency situations and have a small private fleet

of trucks to get units transported around the country. It is of

course not cheap but downtime is far more expensive to a municipality

or metro area, especially, which makes us look like a bargain. Not

that we'd ever hope for emergencies, but we fill a niche in this

regard and indirectly have probably helped a lot of people.

See? Don't even think about leaving Paula! You bring so much

interesting information and personal thoughts for people to reflect on.

Not that we need a continuous stream of durable building materials.

No pressure... ;)
