Guest guest
Today's DailyOM brought to you by: October 3, 2008Fresh and UnfixedThere Is Only Now It can be easy for us to walk through the world and our lives without really being present. While dwelling on the past and living for the future are common pastimes, it is physically impossible to live anywhere but the present moment. We cannot step out our front door and take a left turn to May of last year, any more than we can take a right turn to December 2010. Nevertheless, we can easily miss the future we are waiting for as it becomes the now we are too busy to pay attention to. We then spend the rest of our time playing “catch up” to the moment that we just let pass by. During moments like these, it is important to remember that there is only Now. In order to feel more at home in the present moment, it is important to try to stay aware, open, and receptive. Being in the present moment requires our full attention so that we are fully awake to experience it. When we are fully present, our minds do not wander. We are focused on what is going on right now, rather than thinking about what just happened or worrying about what is going to happen next. Being present lets us experience each moment in our lives in a way that cannot be fully lived through memory or fantasy. When we begin to corral our attention into the present moment, it can be almost overwhelming to be here. There is a state of stillness that has to happen that can take some getting used to, and the mind chatter that so often gets us into our heads and out of the present moment doesn’t have as much to do. We may feel a lack of control because we aren’t busy planning our next move, assessing our current situation, or anticipating the future. Instead, being present requires that we be flexible, creative, attentive, and spontaneous. Each present moment is completely new, and nothing like it has happened or will ever happen again. As you move through your day, remember to stay present in each moment. In doing so, you will live your life without having to wait for the future or yearn for the past. Life happens to us when we happen to life in the Now. Call 1-877-2-DAILYOM (1-877-232-4596) to listen to DailyOM messages on your phone for free. Guest guest
Hmmmmm i've always had some odd thoughts on the matter of what is now and when is then and who is where and how this sentence makes any sense at all :-P. But as much as everyone seems to be making a big fuss over the present, personally i think it's a bit overrated, i mean what can you really do right NOW or right NOW or even now? You can write the words now apparently :-P. But you know what else you can do, you can learn from the past, and you can plan for the future (knowing of course that your plans can change at any given moment, that that's ok, it's part of being alive right?). That's something most other animals can't do, and they're doing research into the idea that it was our ansestors eating and surviving the trips they took when eating plants with psycadelics in them :-3, not only are we decended from monkeys, but we might be decended from fried out monkeys!! :-D HAHAHAHAHA!! you can't tell me that's not awesome hehehe :-3. But anyone who's had experiances with said stuff, or even it seems to me these kundalini experiances as well, has some understanding of the nature of time and it's flexability and frail structure a cognative exercize in processing and organizing information. There are ways of organizing time other than linearly, there are ways of looking at it as another spacial demention, as facets of a whole, as fractaled moments, and probably loads more. But that's the big diffrence between humans and most animals. A human can see that diffrence, not all animals can. A human for instance watches an apple on a table for ten minutes, and if asked if that apple is in the same state it was in ten minutes ago they will respond no, it's either ten minutes more or less ripe then it was ten minutes ago, but a dog will look at the apple for ten minutes and when asked if it's changed will reply that of course it hasn't it's just an apple sitting there! And you'll be taken aback with the prospect of a talking dog. But using the moment to think about the future or past, is a boon! And should be used in conjunction with appreciating the moment right? There's a hardstyle song that talks a bit about this, it's called F#ck the System, and it's by a produced named showtek and it's awesome :-3 albeit a bit over the top. but yes :-3 stuff, it's cool, uhh... that's about it :-P. and it happens in sequencial order to us :-P
