Guest guest
I have been wondering about this for a long time. It is a minor thing, but was just wondering the reason why. I can understand the reason for not crossing the legs when one is being given shaktipat, but I was wondering why during medtiation one should not. So what is the reason for not crossing the legs when a person sits in a chair or is lying down to meditate? You cross your legs in the yoga position, so why would it make a difference to cross your legs sitting or lying down? Would like to know the reason why. Can anyone tell me? Just about in all meditation intructions it says not to, but does explain why. Love Linda
Guest guest
Hi Linda, I have no clue as to what the official answer to this is so here is my " off the wall answer " ... When sitting in yoga position the connection to the earth is through the pelvis as this is the part of the body that connects with the " ground " ...or so I feel. The legs are in no way obstructing the energy flow as they are positioned in an open way from the hip to the knee, then bending the legs at the knees so that they come inwards and then " cross " near the ankles, or else sit one leg upon the other. This feels like an open and unobstructed position, in fact this position helps the sitting bones and the spine to stay straight i feel. In the sitting position on a chair the body does not automatically adopt an open position, the legs are close together and the feet are what connects the body to the ground. If the legs are crossed it causes unbalance with just one foot touching the earth. Also when sitting in a chair the crossing of the legs occurs above the knee and I think this obstructs energy flow into into the pelvis. I would think that this position of crossed legs pulls on the pelvic bones and so crossed legs also put a strain on the body to keep the back straight which is as it should be for meditation... So I think that not crossing the legs gives balance to the body in the sitting position. my take on it for what it is worth... intersting question Linda. love julia akening-Systems-1 , " danceswithcats999 " <crazycats711 wrote: > > I have been wondering about this for a long time. Guest guest
Thanks Julia, what you say makes sense. For me personally because my legs are so short most chairs are to high for me to be comfortable with feet flat on the floor. Much of the time, I sat naturally for me with my feet crossed, not my legs and all my toes on both feet do touch the floor. Hehe! Most of the time though, I sat yoga style in chairs. LOL! I meditate most of the time reclinging. Thanks for your reply. Guest guest
Both positions are good for the individual. Guest guest
After posting the original post of this, I have come to realize that the tingling and burning and now pain in my toes is probably the results of my legs resting on my toes so much. I recieved this new computer chair for a christmas present and it cannot be lowered enough for me. I think I need to give up my new chair. I have been having this problem with my toes since christmas. Duh! on me! Guest guest
Hi Linda Instead of giving up your chair - how about a box (or footrest) to rest your feet on? I have made a few for my vertically challenged daughter - just an old cushion on a box usually does it.
