If you spend a lot of time visiting astrology sites, you might run into the word 'yagya'. Probably not in the site's main body, but in some of the accompanying adverts.

A yagya is a Hindu religious ceremony, that can supposedly boost your luck. It's a ceremony that you don't have to attend, which can be based on one's Hindu horoscope.

The word 'yagya' is cognate with the English word 'ignite' - so it's connected with fire. One makes an offering to the gods, and fire consumes it.

Ishtaan bhogaan hi vo devaa daasyante yajnabhaavitaah;

Tair dattaan apradaayaibhyo yo bhungkte stena eva sah.

The gods, nourished by the Yagya[ yajna], will give you the desired objects. So, he who

enjoys the objects given by the gods without offering (in return) to them, is verily a thief.:smash:

Yagya or Homam Fire ritual is found in many ancient religions. Unlike the elements of earth, water and air, fire is ever pure and it purifies whatever it comes in contact with. The Sanskrit name for fire is paavaka, i.e. purifier. Fire is a living god that everyone has access to. Spending time worshipping god through fire purifies one's subtle consciousness.

Vedic seers (rishis) performed homam regularly, for the benefit of the world.
