ISKCON wants to develop Mayapur jointly with Centre, WB govt

KOLKATA, DEC 29 (PTI)

The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) has taken up an ambitious plan to develop its global headquaters at Mayapur in West Bengal's Nadia district as a major tourist attraction and wants cooperation from the Centre and West Bengal government for the project.

The plan inlcudes construction of a Rs 500-crore temple and a Rs 100 crore 'Vedic Planetarium' at Mayapur, improvement of infrastructure and development of cottage and small-scale industries in the area, ISKCON Foundation chairman Alfred Ford told newsmen here.

"We want to develop Mayapur as a centre of knowledge... Mayapur will be a centre of spiritual education unlike any on earth. We are planning to develop Mayapur in partnership with the Government of India and Government of West Bengal," he said.

Great-grandson of Henry Ford who founded the Ford Motor Company, Alfred Ford is in Kolkata in connection with the foundation laying ceremony of the ISKCON's new temple complex.

Ford, who has personally committed Rs 50 crore for the Mayapur temple project, is scheduled to meet West Bengal Chief Secretary Sourin Roy tomorrow to seek the state government's help in the Mayapur development project, ISKCON sources said.
