ISKCON to feed students

TIMES OF INDIA NEWS NETWORK [FRIDAY, JULY 04, 2003 12:36:46 AM]

NEW DELHI: The new mid-day meal scheme for providing cooked meals to students in MCD schools was kicked off on Thursday with the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (Isckon) distributing meals at the MCD school, Sarai Julena.

A simple meal of dal-chawal and halwa was provided to the 346 students of Sari Julena school. The initial programme will cover five schools benefiting 2,483 students in the schools situated at Sarai Julena, Masih Garhi, Bharat Nagar and Modi Mills. The food distribution was supervised by MCD commissioner Rakesh Mehta and Isckon temple president Maha Mantra Das.

Mehta said that through the new programme more students would be attracted to MCD schools. This will also check drop-out rates and provide supplementary nutrition to poor children. Although Isckon is yet to sign a formal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the MCD, they will be meeting with Mehta on Monday to work out the details.

Isckon has also distributed steel plates and spoons in the schools at its own expense. Education committee chairman Farhad Suri also appealed to other religious and charitable institutions to come forward for the cause. The MCD has 1,800 schools under its wing with over 900,000 students on its roll.
