To become a perfect vairagi, one must know vairagya vidya (or , the proper knowledge related to detachment.). This knowledge can be found in bhagavad gita. That will be a failure. Read these books and Bhagavad Gita properly. You will learn how one can be a good vairagi even while staying as a householder. that is called yukta vairagya.
