Mahabharata epic was between 1493 BC to 1443 BC: Scientist

Press Trust of India

Bangalore, October 26

A scientist at the Indian Institute of Science here has claimed to have found the period of the Mahabharata to be between 1493 BC and 1443 BC based on eclipses and planetary observations made in six printed versions of the epic.

The "archaeo-astronomy" claims have disputed the earlier known dates of the event in Dwapara Yuga based on historical and archaeological evidence as between 3100 BC to 3000 BC.

"The eclipses and planetary observations of the Mahabharata should belong to 1493 BC to 1443 BC of Indian history," IISc Department of Civil Engineering Professor R Narayana Iyengar told PTI here on Sunday.

"The 23 day Kurukshetra war between Kauravas and Pandavas should have taken place in 1478 BC. This result may have an error band of one year, since the intervals between the three constraining eclipses are uncertain to the extent of one year," Iyengar, an authority on earthquake engineering, said.

His research was based on interpreting six different versions of the epic including in Sanskrit, Telugu, Kannada and English, besides calculating planet and star positions and eclipses described in the epic using modern IT tools and astronomy software. The software has been used to validate eclipse observations made by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

"These dates match with those mentioned in the Bhagavatha and Vishnu Purana," Iyengar, a Sanskrit scholar, said.

could this mean that sri krishna's time is not the 3rd mellinium BC....its 1500 years later.

for anyone with thoughts on sri rama, i read an article a couple months back in which an indian dr used the astrology in the ramayana to date the time perioud to around 5000 BC. She actually dated Sri Rama's date of birth as being January 8, 5114 BC.

especially Rama's appearance at 5,134 BC. Yugas are cyclic, so there may have been another instance when the same planetary alignments occurred at a far earlier date for Rama.

archeologically, it does match up tho. its a very small probability scientifically that Sri Rama lived earlier....

let me ask u a question...do u believe that other mythologies from other religions are also real?

maybe there is for Krishna, but I've never heard of any archaeological evidence for Rama. The time that Rama is said to have existed is based solely upon celestial alignments, therefore it's inconclusive. All it suggests is that is a POSSIBLE time when Rama could have existed. However, if we were to believe that Rama lived in Dwapara yuga, he would have had to exist at a much earlier date, where those exact same celestial events occurred.

Wasn't there a man-made bridge supposedly found that connects India to Sri Lanka? Dated to be around 1 million years old? Couldn't that be from the Ramayana?

Also, I thought I read somewhere that Dwaraka was found off the coast of India, and it was dated to be around 3000 BC which WOULD correlate with beginning of kali yuga. And in Dwaraka there was a seal found to be translated saying Krishna lives here or something like that.

Obviously, what I read may not be reliable so take it with a grain of salt.

So I take it that you don't believe in the stories of the Mahabharata or Ramayana? Since you consider them "mythologies" I guess that you don't. Do you believe in an aryan invasion having occurred around that time? To me, those dates mentioned seem to remarkably correlate with the dates for the Aryan Invasion, and I have read in other sites that Krishna and Rama were merely Aryan invaders and scoundrels, not gods or avatars or anything divine.

u misunderstand, when i say they are mythologies, that doesn't mean i discard it as false. mythology to me is a collection of stories staring gods and deities. i most definatley believe in the mahabharata and the ramayana and i deinatley believe that they existed. now, as for gods, my view may be different from most others.

I believe that god exists in all of us. Based upon the good that a man does and his attainment of perfection, or so called perfection is what makes one considered a true incarnation of the Lord. I believe Sri Rama and Sri Krishna were born and lived like I or you have lived. We are all extenstions of God. Only, Rama and Krishna lived divine lives and came closer to perfect realization of God and that is what makes them avatars. In that sense, they can be labeled as Gods, where as we cannot.

I accept your claim that it is a possible date that the Ramayana occurred, but scientifically speaking, why has there never been archeology discovered of hundreds of thousands of years back?? If Sri Rama lived a million years ago, then there was an advanced civilization a million years ago. What happened to them? WHy is there no trace of advanced civilizations on earth a million years ago>?

also, that bridge that was discovered was dated to about 1750 BC if im not mistaken

was supposedly dated to be over a million years old, at least from what I've read. A bridge that's made of stone I think, linking India to Sri Lanka. Even if it weren't, do you not believe in the vedic concept of manvantara? That civilizations rise and fall, and that all traces could have been extinguished from the earth, at least as far as we can tell for now? Even the Bible says something like this, with the quote, "There is nothing new under the sun".

Yes, Evidences indicate the bridge to be 1,700,000 years old.Recently, there was a programme on The Discovery Channel about 'Finding the lost city of Dwaraka' and it was found to exist in 3500B.C.

However, these dates do not matter to us. The dates of existence of Dwaraka or Ayodhya, Rama or Krishna does not matter. What matters the most is what they said, how they lived and what do we learn from that. We dont hesitate to workship a monkey God like Hanuman because, that is not important, what do we learn from him, i.e Pure devotion, is important.

That is why we Indians (Hindus) dont bother about the details or facts. We just talk about these discoveries, just for the sake of it. We actually go beyond it.

Anything that goes against Vedas is Tamasic.

Stala puranas are not a part of Vedas

So they are Tamasic.

Actually I got used to it that I dont have to wait for them to answer :-)

Dear Guest

Are sthala puranas also mentioned in the vedas ? According to Gokul one of the avatars Adi Buddha preached against the brahminic ideas to the pandavas and make them understand( I would assume brahmins must have been quoting vedas only at that time) so was Narayana not himself agains the vedas.

Gokul iam abusing you ? Iam a madhva by birth and my gurus belong to the mutts established by shri madhvacharya himself.Iam trying to understanding different aspect of this religion without going with just belief.

The Dwarka city was found recently in 1988.

The mention of this city was there in mahabharata before the discovery and it was also said that it was submerged into the sea.
