Similarly Durga, Kali, Jagdambe, Gauri, Shakti....

i think the difference is just a degree of destruction....where durga is a destruction on an individual level, kali is on a grander level...

durga is the destruction of the misery. i think she also represents destruction of one person during war,

whereas kali is the association with a battlefield where many lay dead.

this is purely mythological, but i think philosophically, it is just a matter of degree. Kali is a more destructiove force than Durga.

That is a very strange way of describing a mother goddess when she took that appearance to get rid of very demonic creatures just like her husband Shiva who took all the poison from sea curdling.

When you are dealing with demonic creature you need a fearsome appearance,

as the saying in Hindi goes

LATON KE BHOOT BATON SE NAHIN MANTE HEIN

Seems to me, Kali is destruction when it is most painful, the destruction of desires that bring wholesome and pleasing results within our limited perspective, but things that are nonetheless barriers to achieving moksha; Durga is the destruction of painful and unpleasant things, which is why she is depicted as much more pleasing to the eye.
