Sephiroth
I have noticed the last two days that Hindu houses have this small (earth) lanterns lit outside the house. I asked one of my Hindus Colleaque and he said it is Kaitegai Deivam but he is not very familiar with it also. So, what is Kaitegai Deivam? Looking at the name, Kaitega - I guess it has something to do with Muruga, Lord Shiva's youngest, right?
maadhav
i do not know these words, but if these are the lamps placed out in the times of dipawali, then i coudl tell the symbolic meaning. per vedic literature we tell the world and the death: shruNvantu vishve, amritasya putraaH. (o world, listen. we are the children of immortality.) By placing a lamp at the door we tell to yamaraaj (god of death), Oh death come if you may. we are not afraid of you. we have lived per dharma the whole year, and are fearless, we are immortal (as the soul.) hope it helps.
