Gauracandra
Sometime back I was told that Sikhs grow about 50% of all the agriculture in California. This really shocked me. From what I have read there are about 250,000 Sikh Americans throughout the United States. While that may not be a whole lot, they have a very strong community network. I haven't confirmed yet that 50% figure, but I did find a few interesting websites about the Sikh experience coming to the U.S. Take a look through these sites: http://www.lib.berkeley.edu/SSEAL/echoes/chapter1/chapter1.html http://www.lib.ucdavis.edu/punjab/t_usphot.html It is mentioned that many were farmers back in India, and when they found the fertile California land they quickly took to farming as a connection to their roots. Also, as an aside, I know a young kid who starred in a small movie filmed in Oregon about Sikh immigrants to the U.S. and the discrimination they faced. There is a commercial running in the U.S. right now which has all different races saying "I am an American". It is really good. Reading about these Sikh Americans, and seeing photos from the early 1900s brings that home alot.
