[atha nADI-jnAnam] Pulse Exam Description

sadyaH snAtasya bhuktasya, tathA snehAvagAhinaH |

xut-tRSNArtasya suptasya, nADIsamyak na budhyate |2|

Person's pulse who has just bathed, eaten or oil-bathed, is hungry, thirsty or sleeping cannot be examined accurately.

Artery at thumb base is life's witness.

By this artery's movement, any wiseman can examine body pleasance & unpleasance.

daxine hasta-pAde ca, parIxet vidhivat dvijaH |3|

Pulse should be examined in right hand & right leg according to prescribed procedure.

carakAt = According to Caraka

strINAM bhiSag-vAma-haste, pAde vAme ca yatnataH |

zAstreNa sampradAyena, tathA svAnubhavena vai |4|

[yoga-ratnAkara: nADI parIXA:11]

In females, left hand & left leg artery should be examined.

This exam should be conducted carefully according to medical classics' instructions, tradition & physician's experience.

Below middle finger is pitta’s site. Below last (ring) finger is kapha’s site.

In healthy person, artery pulsates in respective places with concerned doSas’ characteristic features.

Examination should be conducted with great care, gem-like.

Proficiency in this examination is attainable only by constant practice.

agre vAtavahA nADI, madhye vahati pittalA |

ante zleSma vikAreNa, nADI ~eyA sadA budhaiH ||7||

Wise physician should always know:

1) artery carrying vAyu pulsates below index finger

2) artery carrying pitta pulsates below middle finger

3) artery carrying kapha pulsates below ring finger.

So, if someone gives you the finger, don't feel bad.

See it in a positive way. You can hand~le it.

sarpa jalaukAdi gatiM vadanti vibudhAH prabhaM janena nADIm |

Due to vAyu/air, pulse moves like sarpa = snake, jalAkau = leech etc.

Pittena kAka lAvaka maNDUkAdi gatiM vidus tathA capalAm ||8||

Due to pitta/bile, pulse moves like kAka (crow), lAvaka (sparrow), maNDUka (frog) etc.

It is very fickle.

RAjahaMsa mayUrANAM, pArAvata kapotayAH |

KukkuTasya gatiM dhatte, dhamanI kapha sanginI ||9||

Due to kapha/mucous, pulse moves like rAjahaMsa (swan), mayUra (peacock),

pArAvata (dove), kapota (pigeon) and kukkuTa (cock/rooster)

vRddha-hArItaH = According to HArIta

spandate caika mAnena, triMza-dvAraM yadA dharA |

svasthAnena tadA nUnaM, rogI jIvati nAnyathA ||13||

If pulse pulsates in same manner in its own place at least 30x, then patient survives.

Otherwise, not.

sthitvA sthitvA vahati yA, sA jneyA prANadhAtinI |

If pulse pulsates after pauses, this indicates impending death.

jihmaM jihmaM zithilaM zithilaM vyAkulaM vyAkulaM vA ||14||

sthitvA sthitvA vahati dhamanI yAti nAzaM ca sUxmA |

If pulsation is curved, sluggish, irregular after pauses...

and if pulsation is very thin, then person succumbs to death.

pArzve skandhe sphurati punarapy anguliM sanspRzedvA |

bhAvair evaM bahu vidhataraiH sanipAtAda sAdhyA ||15||

If pulse is felt/happens in shoulder sides, next in fingers...

and if similar other features are observed, patient is sannipAta.

sannipAta = collapse, death, descent, destruction, falldown

Person having such pulse is incurable.

pUrvaM pitta-gatiM prabha~jana gatiM zleSmANamAvibhratIm |

svasthAnAd gamanaM muhur vidadhatiM cakrAdhiruDheva yA ||16||

bhISmatvaM dadhatiM kalApi gatikAM sUxmatvamAtanvatIM |

no'sadhyAM dhamanIM vadanti munayo nADI gati-jnAninaH ||17||

If pulse first bears pitta symptoms, next vAyu, after kapha;

if pulse shifts from its place frequently, moves like wheel,

if it beats fiercefully, beats after pauses,

if it's thready,

then, according to experts, patient will not recover.

gambhIrA yA bhaven nADI, sA bhaven mAMsa vAhinI |

GambhIrA (deep-seated/thick) beating indicates pulse carries mAMsa/flesh (muscle tissue nutrients).

jvara-vegena dhamanI, soSNA vegavatI bhavet ||18||

In fever, pulse is slightly hot to touch & has faster beat.

kAma krodhAd vegavahA, xINA cintamayAplutA |

When passion & anger afflict, pulse speeds up.

When worry & fear afflict, pulse becomes thready.

mandAgneH xIna dhAtoz ca, nADI mandatarA bhavet ||19||

If one suffers from mandAgni (digestive power suppression) & dhAtu-xaya (tissue element diminution), his pulse becomes very subtle to touch.

CapalA xudhi tasyApi, tRptasya vahati sthirA |

[ yoga ratnAkara: nADI parIxA : 22-26 ]

If one is hungry, there’s pulse instability.

If one’s hunger is satiated, there’s pulse stability.

zItrA nADI [malopetA], dinArddhe’gni samo jvaraH ||21||

If pulse beats very fast & appears to be covered with excreta, then within ½ day person will suffer from high temperature fever.

MRtyur Damaru kasyaiva, bhaved eka dinena ca |

“madhye dvAdazayAmAnAM, mRtyus tasya na saMsayaH ||23||

If pulse beat appears like Damaru drum beating, then person succumbs to death in one day. He certainly dies within 36 hrs; of this there is no doubt.

ZItalaM hRdayaM nAsA, hasta-pAdau ca zItalaM |

NADI vegavatI xINA, xaNam ekaM na jIvati ||24||

If heart, nose, hands, feet become cold & if pulse beats very fast but subtly, then he does not live for a even moment.

6.25 darzanaM sparzanaM [praznaM], caturthaM nADI laxaNaM |

miSagrogAn vadet pazcAn, munir Atreyam Asitam ||25||”

||iti nADI parIxA||

According to Atreya, first of all, physician should examine patient (disease) by darshan (direct observation), sparshan (touch), prashna (interrogation), nADI-laxaNa (pulse characteristics).

Thereafter he should determine disease’s exact nature.

Thus ends pulse examination description.

atha mUtra parIxA = Urine Examination

brahme muhUrte cotthAya, Adya dhArAM parityajet |

zubhe pAtre madhya-dhArAM, kRtvA mUrdhnAM zukAvRtam ||26||

bhAskarodaya velAyAM, prakAze sthAnake dhRtam |

loDayitvA tato mUtraM, parIxeta tato dhRtam ||27||

pramehaM mUtra varnaM ca, nirAmaM sAmam eva vA |

Patient's urine should be collected when he gets up from bed during brahma-muhUrta (pre-dawn).

First urine flow should be rejected.

Middle urine flow (dhArA) should be collected clean vessel.

Vessel mouth should be covered (with clean cloth to prevent dust, flies).

At sunrise, it should be brought to lit place.

Holding container, urine should be stirred to see if there's prameha ( obstinate urinary disorders including diabetes), urine color & its nirAma as well as sAma condition.

tRNenAdAya tailasya, vinduM mUtra kRte sati ||28||

vikAsi cet tailam athAzu mUtre, sAdhyaH sa rogI, na vikAsitaz cet |

syAt kaSTa sAdhyasta lage sva sAdhyo, nAgAr junenaiva kRtA parIxA ||29||

Oil should be collected in straw piece & dropped on urine’s surface.

If oil spreads instantaneously, then disease is curable.

If oil does not spread, then disease is difficult to cure.

If oil descends to urine container’s bottom, then disease is incurable.

This urine test method has been described by NagArjuna.

snigdhaM vasAmalachAyAM, vAte mUtraM prajAyate |

tarIm upari badhnAti, taila bindu yutaM tathA |

If person suffers from vAtik disease, then urine is unctuous & looks like vasA (muscle fat) waste product.

Oil drop remains stagnant on urine surface.

*mutre zleSmaNi jAyante, samaM palvala vAriNA ||32||”

If there’s kapha aggravation, then urine appears like palvala (muddy tank) water.

CarpaTitaH = According to CarpaTi

NilAc-charUxa hima-kRSNanibhaM

(ca vAyau) pItAruNaM taila samaM

SnigdhaM kaphAdvahalaM palva lavAr ity ulyam

snigdhoSNa rakta vahalaM rudhira prakope ||32||

Due to vAyu aggravation, urine becomes blue,

transparent, unctuous, cold, black..

Due to pitta aggravation, urine becomes reddish & oil-like.

Due to kapha aggravation, urine becomes unctuous, thick, like palvala (tank) water.

Due to rakta vitiation, urine becomes unctuous, hot, red, thick.

mAtulunga rasAbhAsaM, sauvIrAbhaM jalopamam |

prapAkarahitAnAM ca, mUtraM candana sannibham ||33||

If there’s indigestation, urine looks like mAtulunga

juice, sauvIra (vinegar),

simple water or sandalwood paste.
