Kali Santarana Upanishad

(Upanishad No. 103 of The Krishna Yajurveda)

At the end of the Dvarapa Yuga, Narada Muni approached his father, Lord Brahma and asked him, "How can I overcome the evil influences of the Kali Yuga (the Age of Quarrel and Hypocrisy)?"

Lord Brahma replied, "It is through the utterance of the names of the Purusha (the Enjoyer), Lord Narayana, that one is rid of all evil effects." He added,

"Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare

Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare."

The above collection of sixteen names is destructive of the baneful influences of the present dark era, the Kali Yuga. Beyond this, there is no other means to liberation in any scriptures. It is destructive also of the veil of ignorance of the jiva which is invested with the sixteen kalas beginning with prana and ending with naman when the transcendent Brahman manifests itself in all its glory, even as the radiant region of the solar disc shines forth brilliantly with the vanishing of the clouds.

Sage Narada concluded by saying, "O Lord, hearing the further eulogy and the narration of details of more benefits, it is quite appropriate that no special rule be followed in the matter of muttering this sacred name, which can be done at all times whether in a clean or even an unclean state. Salutations to thee."

- Thus the Upanishad.

These are all according to Vedic injunction. This Hare Krishna movement is not a manufactured way. This is actually following the Vedic principle. This is Agni-Purana, Brahmanda-Purana, Brahma-vaivarta-Purana, and Kali-santarana-Upanishad. There are many Vedic literatures, they are recommended, this Hare Krishna. Sometime it is said, "Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare"; sometime it is "Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare." So people become puzzled, which one should be first vibrated. So any one you can vibrate. Either you chant Hare Krishna or Hare Rama in the beginning, it doesn't matter. There is no difference between the holy name of Krishna and Rama. SB lecture

Upanishads are held sacred and are regarded as the highest form of Jnana.

The shastras say that the Vedas and Upanishads can be learnt and chanted only by a specific sect of people, because of the rigorous tone and intonnation involved in these.

Mahaprabhu, agreat mahan that he was, did want to liberate the masses from this ocean of samsara through the Mahamantra, and at the same time not violate the Shastras. Hence he preached it as

Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare

Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare

When repeated continuously, this indeed reads the same way as stated by the Upanishads.

Did not Valmiki chant the Holy Taraka Mantra as 'mara' 'mara' and was able to give to the world the great Itihasa called Ramayana?

Sri Prabhupada and his movement followed Mahaprabhu's footsteps.

There are other Saints and Mahans, like Swami Abhedananda of Tiruvananthapuram and innumerable saints of Brindavan who have, out of their sheer mercy and compassion given the Mahamantra as is from the Upanishads, as in this Kali Yuga where none of the rules laid out in the Shastras can be practically followed in spirit.

Though powerful by itself, the Mahamantra, if initiated by a Guru, creates multifold effect and helps us reach our ultimate destination quicker.
