the description of how each " universe" is created

is described as follows.

Vishnu is laying in the causual ocean(refering to god existing everywhere towards infinity, within the power and energy of his intrinsic infinite nature.)

From the pores of his skin come innumerable "universes",with an expansion of vishnu presiding over each.(universe refers

to something different then the athesitic concept).

From the naval of vishnu sprouts a lotus flower, sitting on the flower is lord Brahma.( the lotus flower is symbolism

for the mind, and brahma is symbolism for intellect,in other words God 's mind is connected to his being, and in that mind god's intellect sits.)

Brahma spends a very long time meditating trying to

attain the ability to create the world, after a long time and tremendous tapasya, austerity, and yagna, sacrifice,

he gains the ability to create this world.( god's intellect meditates and after

sufficient time a mental design for this world

is achieved ,and creation follows.)

that is both the literal and symbolic understanding of the vedic concept.

you might want to refer to "canto #1" of srimad bhagavatam that deals with the creation.

you can download it from harekrishnatemple website.

Although the BBT edition of the Bhagavata is for some reason titled "Creation", it hardly deals with creation at all. The second and third cantos contain several chapters which go into the details of creation.

The English titles of the cantos are given based on the ten subjects of Srimad Bhagavatam (atra sargo visargash ca, etc.). The first canto is named after the first subject of the Bhagavatam, namely sarga, or creation.

But it is not that the ten subjects are presented in the ten cantos in such a way, they are all spread around the Bhagavata, though some cantos have more emphasis on particular themes.
