Gauracandra
Scientist Announces Project to Create New Form of Life A new bioethics challenge this week: the announcement of research that could lead to a new form of life. In Rockville, Maryland, geneticist Craig Venter said he plans to alter a simple cell so it could reproduce itself as a never-before-existing organism. The project is funded by a $3 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy. It could lead to new ways to protect the environment, or create fuel. It also could make possible new kinds of biological weapons. Venter said ethics advisers concluded that trying to create a new life form is all right, as long as the experiment is safe and the intent is to help humankind.
