Tirupati, Mahalakshmi, Shirdi are fidayeen targets Author: Pramod Kumar Singh Publication: The Pioneer January 16, 2003 Various terrorist outfits owing allegience of Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) of Pakistan are planning to carry out fidayeen (suicide sqaud) attacks on certain holy shrines in the country. The attacks have been planned to show disaffection in the society and to disrupt the Republic Day celebrations all over the country. Well placed intelligence sources said, the terrorist outfits may attack historical temples located in South India. Famous and reverred Tirupati temple in Andhra Pradesh and Gurvayoor in Kerala, Mahalakshmi temple at Mumbai and Shirdi shrine in Maharashtra have been mentioned in this connection. These temples and shrines attract thousands of devotees everyday. Any terrorist strike on these holy places could spark tension in the society. The attack on Akshardham shrine and Raghunath temple is still fresh and any such misadventure can ignite serious trouble,sources said. There is also a possibility of terrorists carrying out big strikes at camps of security forces in urban and remote areas. In view of the impending threat, the terrorist activities in the national Capital can not be ruled out, intelligence sources said. Terrorist groups may launch subversive strikes on key istallations of Central and Delhi Governments, temples and camps of security forces. Indian Air Force(IAF) station at Mandi Gaon, head quarters of armed forces and cantonment area, Birla temple in New Delhi, Chhatarpur and Kalkaji temple in South district have been identified as key tagets. Keeping in the view, the sensitivity of the intelligence input, an alert has been sounded to maintain a strict vigil on any suspicious movement, intelligence sources added. ISI and various terrorist outfits have altered their strategy for launching subversive strikes in the Indian Capital. The threat this time comes from Nepal, where ISI had achieved a foothold with the help of Nepali mafia. Intelligence intercepts suggest that ISI had planned to target top leadership and nerve centres of the Indian Government, before and during the Republic Day Celebrations. Intelligence agencies have been maintaining surveillance on porous Indo-Nepal and Bangladesh border. During winter when the Jammu and Kashmir border with Pakistan is almost closed due to heavy snowfall, Nepal and Bangladesh borders becomes hyper active with ISI pushing in terrorists into the Indian territory . Intelligence inputs avialable to Delhi Police suggest that a group of highly indoctrinated youths are headed for New Delhi for targetting VVIPs and launching attacks on key Indian installations. Deputy Commissioners of Police(DCPs), posted in 9 districts, Security Wing, Prime Minister(PM)'s security unit, Crime Branch and Indira Gandhi International(IGI) airport have been asked to be on maximum alert. Senior police officers have been instructed to brief the all concerned to ward off any untoward incident. Security agencies are anticipating more strikes as the Republic Day approaches. In the past fortnight week itself, intelligence agencies have intercepted inumerable conversations of Lashkar-e-Tayyeba(LeT), Jaish-e-Mohammad(JeM) and Hizb-ul-Muzahideen(HuM). Members of these terrorist groups have been instructed to carry out attacks to disrupt the Republic Day celebrations in the Indian Capital. "Threat perceptions this year are very serious in nature. LeT in particular is still smarting after Delhi Police successfully neutralised its modules.
